Reflection On My Capstone Experience

As I reflected upon this capstone experience, I quickly realized that I learned so much – more than I ever thought possible in this short amount of time. Here are the top five things I learned:
1. Develop Relationships – Throughout my classes here at Concordia, I have been taught that relationships are the key to creating successful classrooms. Many problems can be avoided and lessened by getting to know your students and showing them that you truly do care about them right from the beginning. This was demonstrated to me once again in my capstone experience. Looking back at my capstone, I wish that I would have had the opportunity to get to know these students better before coming in to teach them. Establish a Routine – Because I taught my capstone at the very end of the school year, there wasn’t much of a “normal routine” taking place, and I could tell that many students experienced some negative side effects because of this. They didn’t always know what was coming next or what was expected of them, and this caused behaviors to worsen. While the lack of routine can’t really be avoided at the end of the year, this experience really showed me that establishing a routine early and sticking to it is vital and beneficial for all students.
3. Demonstrate Flexibility – As a teacher, you can have the most organized, well-written lesson plans in the whole entire world, but that doesn’t automatically make you the world’s best teacher. You have to be on your toes and willing to shift things around as you go. During my capstone, things definitely didn’t go as I had envisioned. Certain activities took much longer than I expected, and I had to make some tough decisions in order to stay on schedule.
