While entering my last year of high school I was almost certain that I was going to college to become a registered nurse. Which university I wanted to attend was still to be determined. When I started planning my future I first started looking at the schools that had the best nursing programs. My school had a college fair and gave us our transcripts to show the schools. The schools that I looked at told me that on my gpa alone that I was a good candidate but most schools wanted to make sure you met a certain sat score which I didn’t. The very first chapter that we read in this class was why go to college. Many students answer with to make more money but this chapter tells you many reasons why it Is good to go to college like it makes you more marketable professionally, you learn how to accumulate knowledge and you even grow intellectually etc. This class really helped me know what to expect out of the first semester and gave me good tips and advice in how to be successful from the beginning. This class was like a guide on what to do instead on just trying to figure out what to do on our own we basically had a guide to follow. Dr. Bennett helped us out a lot. When we first had a test in sociology he gave us tips to help us study. He even took a class period to help us study as a class we broke into groups and had study groups. While in this class I learned to be realistic about the goals that we set. The book that we read in class Your College Experience, gave great tips about everything from paying for schooling to what to expect. When I came to Orientation I realized I was an emerging scholar at the time I had no idea what it meant. I soon realized that this was a great program to be a part of. This program is for undecided freshmen and they are there to help you, be a friend and make your transition easier. My mentors Ruben and Lily were very helpful especially Ruben. They reached out to us before we even came to school which I only realized after I got here because I didn’t check my emails. They were there to help us find our way in college. They made us feel welcomed and gave you a friend. They made it easy for you to talk to them and help. When me and Lexi reached out to Ruben to help us study for our first sociology exam, he made time to help us study even when he had to study for his own exam. He gave us tips on how to understand the material
“Coastal Carolina is too far away for you to come home when you have the chance.” Kaylee (my Girlfriend at the time) said to me in my first car as we talked about college choices. I told her about my acceptance to Coastal Carolina University I received from Mrs. Emmons (personal guidance counselor in high school) during a school day, early February. Kaylee’s words made me start a to question myself; “What other colleges can I choose?”. It takes a while to get to know yourself before you are able to care for another person. Studying oneself is challenging because it allows reflection of one’s inner self, exposing your strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, interests, habits, defenses, and values. On the same note, it allows a person to be more familiar with the challenges he or she faces, how they might respond to certain situations, and offers an opportunity for learning and growth. Throughout this paper, I will discuss the various pieces of myself. I will consider my personal and professional life as a nurse, what I might employ as my mental model, which may limit my frame of thinking, how it has shaped me so far in my education, and how I relate to others.

For example, if as a leader, I had an employee that was clearly distressed and could not help them cope, whether it is something in their professional or personal life, I know a quick email or phone call to Eric Swan, due to his counseling background and leadership classes can help me tremendously. Similarly, if I was ever in a situation where I needed some sort of help understanding the inner workings of a manufacturing team, Joel Marz could give me some valuable insight to lead my organization in a more efficient manner. Attending college and making these connections allows us all to expand our knowledge base. Using them beyond classes and assignments is a priceless tool that we all ought to keep in the back of our minds.
During my undergraduate years in college I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to become when I “grew up”. I would study various professions and never felt like anything fit for me. One evening I sat down with my aunt, a nurse, and I was talking to her about how I couldn’t decide on a major and how frustrating it was to be in college feeling as if I did not have any direction. She looked at me with complete surprise on her face and said, “You aren’t applying for nursing school?” I stared at her for a moment because I was confused as to why she would ask me that. She chuckled and proceeded to tell me that she had always assumed that I would be a nurse because I spent several years of my life taking care of my 3 year old cousin who had cancer. For three years I was his caregiver and it had never occurred to me that I could make a living caring for people. I then spent countless hours researching nursing and what exactly nurses did. This was it! I had finally found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! It took no time at all to know that I wanted to specialize in pediatrics. Throughout my clinical experiences in nursing school I have immensely enjoyed working on the Pediatric units as well as the Nursery. I am now absolutely certain that I am meant to be a pediatric nurse. Cook Children’s is recognized as a Magnet-designated hospital and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the US. Being a Cook Children’s nurse resident would allow me to fulfill my passion and dream of pediatric nursing. Pearson (2013) clarifies “clinical decision making is essential to every aspect of care delivered to a patient” (p. 214). It is the ability to blend information and make decisions that will later be implemented in the situation. Evidence-based decision making involves choosing from a variety of possibilities and combining the knowledge through research and the scientific evaluation of one’s practice. The purpose of this paper is to analyze my decision of administering ativan by advocating for the patient and anticipating her change prior to confirming signs; which provided a therapeutic response.
Wayne (2014), quoted that “People often think that nursing is just an easier alternative to becoming a doctor. When can we escape from this? Probably not, and that’s beyond our control. But this irrational assumption has proved nothing through the years. It only motivated nurses from showing the world their worth and how much of a difference nursing makes”. I also loved when she said that one of the most exciting jobs in the world is nursing and that we should wear the title with pride and that we, nurses, are unique. I totally agree with her, what nurses do is not easy. One of my favorite quotes is “Nurses don’t wait until October to celebrate Make a difference Day - they make a difference EVERY DAY!” (Nurseslabs). As a nurse we put a lot of knowledge, time, effort, and love in caring for our patients making sure that we give our 100 % sometimes even more.
When I first decided to come to college for nursing after staying in university for three years, I had an argument with my parents because they were not happy with my decision. My parents just wanted me to finish rest of my degree and they thought that it did not make sense to go to college for diploma, and not complete the university degree. However, I just wanted to complete my nursing diploma in the same amount of time that I can finish my degree in the university because I always wanted to be a nurse.
I spent much of my high school career researching colleges and universities. My mom and I traveled to well over 10 different colleges and universities in 4 different states trying to find the “perfect” school for me. By the end of my junior year of high school I had finally found the ideal school, or so I thought. The school was small, environmentally friendly, new, beautiful, diverse, and just happened to be located 1,000 miles away from home. Everyone at my small high school knew that I was going away to school and it was a huge deal because the majority of my classmates were going to in state schools. I traveled to the school multiple times for orientations, to meet my roommates, and to make sure it was the “perfect” school for me. Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on in media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many will mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians support staff. Of interest in this paper is why people choose to study nursing in university or college. Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
Reflective Practice is a continuous action that directly affects anyone who is a practitioner. Jasper (2006, p. 53) stated that the benefits to the profession are the development of the nursing knowledge base and the recognition that nurses are contributing to both patient care and improved practice. Further, Jasper (2006, p. 43) explains that Reflective Practice is the foundation upon which reflection and reflective learning are based.
The job I have been interested in since I was a freshmen in high school was a registered nurse (RN). I decided to choose this career because when I was a freshman in highschool I tore my ACL for the first time. I avidly want to study nursing. I feel like being a daft person will help me get along with patients.The nurses were always there to comfort me and made me feel better about the situation I was in. they helped me through the hardest time in my life. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. To me, being a nurse requires a great sense of selflessness and courage to devote your time and being to helping others. Nurses work long hours and experience straining situations for the satisfaction and fulfillment of helping others. More specifically, experiencing life and death, as well as applying your full self--emotions, knowledge, courage, and strength--takes a toil on the mind and body, but the innate satisfaction, human connections, and experiences I would be able to live through prevails over any thought of stress.
