While entering my last year of high school I was almost certain that I was going to college to become a registered nurse. Which university I wanted to attend was still to be determined. When I started planning my future I first started looking at the schools that had the best nursing programs. My school had a college fair and gave us our transcripts to show the schools. The schools that I looked at told me that on my gpa alone that I was a good candidate but most schools wanted to make sure you met a certain sat score which I didn’t. Throughout the course of my last year I was determined to be a nurse even applied to Shippensburg University to study premedical student. The very first chapter that we read in this class was why go to college. Many students answer with to make more money but this chapter tells you many reasons why it Is good to go to college like it makes you more marketable professionally, you learn how to accumulate knowledge and you even grow intellectually etc. This class really helped me know what to expect out of the first semester and gave me good tips and advice in how to be successful from the beginning. This class was like a guide on what to do instead on just trying to figure out what to do on our own we basically had a guide to follow. Dr. Bennett helped us out a lot. When we first had a test in sociology he gave us tips to help us study. He even took a class period to help us study as a class we broke into groups and had study groups. While in this class I learned to be realistic about the goals that we set. The book that we read in class Your College Experience, gave great tips about everything from paying for schooling to what to expect. When I came to Orientation I realized I was an emerging scholar at the time I had no idea what it meant. I soon realized that this was a great program to be a part of. This program is for undecided freshmen and they are there to help you, be a friend and make your transition easier. My mentors Ruben and Lily were very helpful especially Ruben. They reached out to us before we even came to school which I only realized after I got here because I didn’t check my emails. They were there to help us find our way in college. They made us feel welcomed and gave you a friend. They made it easy for you to talk to them and help. When me and Lexi reached out to Ruben to help us study for our first sociology exam, he made time to help us study even when he had to study for his own exam. He gave us tips on how to understand the material
