I walked into the cross cultural center at Cal State San Marcos at 12 p.m. on December 15th 2016. The main objective of this presentation was on a faculty featuring Dr. Toyo, and her presentation was called "an immigrant Woman Journey to family gerontology". I took my seat next to the window on the far left side of the room. When I first got there it was requested that I have my student ID and that I check in with the front desk at the cross cultural center. After I gave them my ID I sat back down and a woman came by and handed me a piece of paper that looked like a survey that is supposed to be filled out at the end of the presentation. Soon after that about 10 minutes till, a girl comes and sits at my table and she has a survey and asked me “am I supposed to fill it …show more content…

She said the person who made the decision to immigrate to the United States was her husband and in-laws. She reflected on gender norms stating that “women are supposed to be submissive to their husbands and follow what they want in life because the wives are supposed to follow their husbands”. Her husband search for the American dream. “When I came to the United States it was a major culture shock. At first there was a language barrier because I was unable to speak well English but when I called up to get my English classes they told me that I do not need to take English because I was able to make a phone call on my own”. She said she begged her because she said she needed this class because our English was not good but they refused to let her have this class. Through her schooling in the United State she was able to make a Friendship Community with other International wives. Because she would have been struggling time being alone and by herself. She wasn 't sure exactly what profession to take so she seek guidance and her guidance counselor actually recommended her to take a public health course and from there on she loved it and it geared more towards human development which is her primary
