Biking is a tremendous way to travel the loop. There are also terrific off-road mountain-biking trails, with levels from amateur to expert. No need to haul your bike with you on, rent one from one of the recommended shops linked on Friends of Red Rock, (www.friendsofredrockcanyon.org).
Keystone Thrust offers a glimpse of the park's most important geological formation, the Keystone Thrust, where the collision of the Pacific and North American continental plates have left their mark. But it also offers some outstanding views from start to finish. The 2.2-mile round-trip, in-and-out trail begins by heading up a gradual hill until it crests a saddle, and a red rock ridge comes into view on the back side. You then follow the trail out onto this ridge and beyond to a high gray ridge, where the trail ends. From here, 360-degree views stretch out over the Calico Hills in the distance and over the Keystone Thrust in the opposite direction. This is almost as dramatic as walking through the canyon. It climbs slightly, winding through junipers and pinon pines. As you approach the opening to the canyon, the trees become much denser, and the area takes on the look of a forest. Beyond the canyon entrance, the trail is littered with large boulders, some the size of cars, which you will need to negotiate. If you are not up for a difficult hike, you can turn back at this point. Continuing on, the trail eventually leads to the end of the canyon, where the stone walls seem to envelop you. Richard King started the small camp with 15,500 acres, the ranch is now 825,000 acres full of some of the finest cattle and horses in the world. Each year, more than 35,000 people go to Kingsville, Texas to visit the ranch.
To add to the difficulty of the trails is the extreme elevation changes. The re are ironically enough thirteen climbs which result in more than 10,000 feet of climb per loop. This is obviously accompanied by an equal amount of descent. One runner described it as climbing 100 floors of stairs in your first mile, going back down on second mile and continuing this for twenty miles. The course amasses an average grade of over 20% and between 50 and near 100 percent grade on the abandoned trails and bushwhacking sections. The grade is the reason that the trails have been abandoned or not built in the first pace. Each climb bears a unique name which in many cases gives a good idea of their nature.
Two well-known footpaths are used during this strenuous hill walk, crossing wild moorland and peat bogs. Exceptional panoramic views and refreshments at the Tan Hill Inn are some of the rewards.

Dangers and months of preparation aside, the American Discovery Trail it is a life changing event for anyone who decides to tackle the vigorous trail. When an individual sets out to cover over 6,000 miles, with nothing but the pack on his back, himself, and the wilderness around them, they find out things about themselves that they never knew. Nature has a way of helping people push themselves to the brink so that they may find themselves in the end. For anyone who is in the process of wanting to find themselves, needs a break, or simply wants a challenge, do the research and tackle the American Discovery Trail.
A lot of young people today see Franklin as a small town without any special value, but the bike trail shows otherwise. Although our region’s glory days are in the past, the community today is strong. A hundred years ago, the people of Franklin built the Belmar Bridge, the three tunnels, and all of the railroads. Today the people of Franklin built the 28 miles of paved bike trails that compose the Allegheny Valley Trail and the Sandy Creek Trail. The fact that we have these wonderful bike trails and many historical landmarks to enjoy on a bike ride any time we want is a testament to the continued strength of our community and the hard work of the Allegheny Valley Trails Association.

Canyonlands National Park, immense amounts of wilderness and rock, is located at the heart of the Colorado Plateau (Canyonlands National Park-Geology). Millions of years have formed specific features to the rock and surrounding wilderness that make it so special. Throughout the park, you will find that the sedimentary rock has formed many features such as hundreds of colorful canyons, mesas, buttes, fins, arches, and spires. The Green and Colorado rivers have played a major role in the formation of many of these features. These rivers cut through the park forming two massive canyons. This further splits the park into three distinct zones. “Island in the Sky” sits to the north while “The Maze” sits off to the west and “The Needles” to the east (Canyonlands National Park Information Guide). “Island in the Sky” serves as Canyonlands’ observation tower; it allows tourists to see overwhelming vistas of the rest of the land. “The Maze,” as hinted at by the name has been described as a “30 square mile puzzle in sandstone” (NPS: Nature & Science» Geology Resources Division). This section of the park often ranks as one of the most remote and inaccessible areas of the United States. Lastly, “The Needles” is known for its diversity in rock features. Throughout this land, features such as sculptured rock spires, arches, canyons, grabens, and potholes can be seen. The varying names hint at the diversity of the land as a whole. There are many conspiracies that people say have happened at the Roswell crash in the summer of 1947 in Roswell New Mexico. Nobody knows what really happened at the crash in Roswell New Mexico but, many people say that the thing that had crashed there was a UFO and or a flying saucer which mean there being aliens. Even after 50 years the people still do not know what happened and for everybody that doesn’t know were going to go deeper into what really happened. The story shows how beautiful and peaceful the scenery is at the beginning, but then man enters and corrupts the perfect scenery. This long and extensive portion of the story that shows the beauty in nature eventually foreshadows the destruction of the canyon when man steps foot into the perfect canyon. The imagery is setting up for the conflict between man and nature. The prospector even digging up the dirt in the search for gold is causing a disturbance in the peacefulness of the canyon. “It [the canyon] was as starlight into atmosphere, shot through and warmed by sunshine, and flower-drenched with sweetness.” Reading that can create a feeling that warms the reader’s heart and creates an image of purity and perfection in the canyon. Quietness describes the canyon before man enters it, and everything was at peace. Then as soon as man had entered the beauty of the canyon, it caused an immediate disturbance when the prospector had entered. “The clash of steel-shod soles against the rocks began to be heard, and the man’s voice grew louder.” The canyon and all its perfection is now tainted and no longer quiet and
