In Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, guilt is shown in almost every character in the story, but it is through Brady that we see the most guilt. Right from beginning, Brady constantly shows guilt from what had happened to Ben. “‘I should have gotten there faster!’ … ‘It’s not your fault. Don’t you dare blame yourself. You tried, Brady. You did everything you could’” (Cummings 50). Brady felt enormous guilt for not doing everything he could in those moments. He thought that it was his fault that Ben died because he didn’t get there quickly enough. “Even if I didn’t take part in drilling the holes, it was my idea” (Cummings 116).
