When I was accepted into Scholl I was elated by the news that I had also been chosen to receive a scholarship. Receiving this scholarship was the first of many positive and welcoming experiences I received as a new member to the North Chicago community and has served as a constant source of encouragement. Throughout my first year I have worked in a continued effort to make sure that the trust placed upon me by the generosity of the donors and the community as a future physician has not been misplaced. With the first year into a new program comes a great deal of change and uncertainty. Early into my first year I set the hefty goal of excelling as a student, becoming a part of extracurricular activities and volunteering to give back to the community that plays such a large role in our learning experience. While my time achieving my undergraduate degree provided me with strong organizational and learning skills, I knew that I would need to adapt these prior skills and learn new ones to be successful in my aspirations. While doing so, I have worked to refine how my time can best be spent studying the course material. This has meant learning to emphasize a mindset of comprehension over memorization, ensuring that I understand the crucial basic science information to build upon in future courses. In the past, I have volunteered for our bands fundraiser every Christmas, which we host at our high school. It is a unique moment in time, to see the joy of children's faces as they walk into the school that morning for Breakfast with Santa. Being able to put on a performance for those children that morning brings joy to my heart and keeps me coming back each year. Another event is the Special Olympics held in Houghton Lake. Students from our school every year go and help setup and run the Special Olympics. Helping out and getting to talk to participants is an honor and has created new relationships with people. I want to be able to give even more back to my wonderful community through the National Honor Society by volunteering and helping as much as I can. I have served in the service committee at Collin College in Frisco. Our chapter has done many fundraising and fellowship events for students within Collin College and with other colleges in Dallas/Fort-worth area. We are currently working on a project called Miracle Network Dance Marathon. It is a fundraising event for the kids at Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in Dallas. With the mission “dance for those who can’t,” participants stand or dance to music constantly for a period of time. Our first Dance Marathon will be on December 2nd. In addition, I have been volunteering at Frisco Family Service, Parr Library, and many other one-time events such as BT5K of American Brain Tumor Association’s.
One of these causes, the Miracle League of the South Hills is particularly close to my heart. A friend of my mother has a child who is severely autistic, and all my life my family and I have volunteered for many organizations to help special needs children, of all of these Miracle League has left the greatest impression on me. Ghandi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others,” and that is exactly what has happened to me during my long term association with the Miracle League. I truly believe my association with this organization has helped me to become a better person, more kind, caring, outgoing, and energetic. Miracle League was founded on the belief that, “Every child deserves a chance to play baseball.” Miracle League operates specially designed fields on which they bring the game of baseball to children who may have never had the opportunity to play on a real field. I volunteer with the Miracle League Buddy program. The Buddy Program pairs volunteers with a Miracle League player to help the player The buddy is there to protect the player from balls, assist the player in batting and running the bases, and to be a friend on and off the field. Everything was so organized and precise, it was like nothing I had ever volunteered for before. At check-in we received our official Chicago Marathon hats and jackets, along with a badge that told us where we were stationed. My mother and I were assigned to the starting corrals; directing runners to one of the 10 groups based on their estimated pace and finish time. As the sun began to rise, we walked out to our positions and waited for the rush of runners to arrive. Slowly they began to trickle past, and then all at once. I couldn’t keep a smile from my face as I watched people of all sorts walk past me to run one of the world’s most iconic marathons. Running has always been a passion of mine and knowing that all those thousands of people shared my same passion was mind blowing to me. Some were just as giddy as me, asking me to take their pictures and not trying to contain their excitement. Everyone, runners and volunteers included, was so kind and appreciative, most thanking me for volunteering as they walked by and making me feel welcome. Sunday, October 15,2017 was an exciting day for me because I got to participate in a very important annual event that can help to save lives. This amazing event is the breast-cancer walk in Coney Island. This was my first experience in this kind of event. Before the event, my class started to raise money for this amazing cause, as I got help from friends and family and I completed my fund-raising goal. Overall, we surpassed the goal of five thousand dollars for this well-deserved caused that afflicts many women worldwide. The entire experience was filled with moments I can never forget. I have been blessed with the opportunity to partake in volunteer activities through school and outside of school. Through VMS, I worked with organizations like Habitat for Humanity and with homeless in Denver through the Grant Street Reach. Still, it wasn’t until I started tutoring local underprivileged kids within our valley community, that I understood the true value of locally targeted programs.
Because of this holistic take on the world, I have always immersed myself in plans that support the aid of both my local community and the international community. Volunteering increases a person’s physical health. A person who volunteers is found to live a longer life. Even more so, volunteers found themselves with lower mortality rates (Dietz et al.). Volunteerism has been helpful in increasing health and consequently lowers mortality rates. Furthermore, people experience less chronic pain when volunteering. Specifically, people experiencing chronic pain found it to decrease when volunteering and serve the public (Dietz et al.). Volunteers experience better health overall, but also specific enhancements such as reducing chronic pain like stated above. People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
Everyday people decide to put forward their time to help out family, friends, strangers, and even the community. When they make this choice to selflessly help others, they are making an impact not only on others, but on themselves as well. They allow growth in both the community, but also in their own lives. Volunteers gain different types of skills from performing various tasks, while also aiding in the well-being of society. Volunteering helps build a more cohesive, safer, stronger community. It increases the social network between communities and neighborhood. It promotes people to be more active in civic engagement and concerned of citizenship. Volunteering also delivers some parts of public services, encouraging more people work in public section, helping raise the educational performance of youth, leading environmental movement and adapting to climate change. Volunteering begins to impact the lives of the volunteers in multiple ways, while also affecting the community. People volunteer in different types of ways in different types of situations. Some of the most usual places where volunteers are seen are in hospitals, churches, schools, soup kitchens, and disaster relief groups. Some people are members of volunteer groups for long periods of time, while others join only when certain circumstances require volunteer service. Whether or not they are volunteering for themselves or not, their volunteer work still has an impact on them and the community.
Volunteering impacted my life by building my self-confidence, relationship skills, and social skills. Helping others and devoting my time to this organization supplied me with a sense of pride. I now know that I have the ability to accomplish a wide spectrum of tasks. Volunteering gave me a positive outlook on life. While doing so, I met numerous people whether they were patients, coworkers, or other volunteers. I learned how to share similar interests with others which created friendships. As relationships began forming, I felt an enormous amount of support. I ceased to be timid; my interaction with others strengthened.
This year, I had the opportunity to give back to the community in many ways. I volunteered at Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, and the county Science Museum. These volunteering experiences further opened my eyes to the needs of my community and the many opportunities to serve by volunteering.
Living up to my resolution, I joined several clubs, both in and out of school and academic and recreational. I also met some of my very best friends in high school. Achieving all of this, friends, memberships to academic clubs and good grades, made up my first successful experience in high school. I was driven by the years in middle school and the promise that I made to myself at the end of eighth grade. Throughout my under classmen years I exceled in all subjects and thoroughly enjoyed the clubs I had joined. I think my downfall for the last two years of school was that I took for granted my good grades and as my classes got more rigorous I didn’t change the way I learned the material, but continued on the same path that I had been following my entire academic career, even when my grades were slipping slightly. Halfway through my senior year, I realized I needed to change the way I was learning the curriculum my instructors were teaching. I’ve always been the type of student to take good notes or listen to a lecture and understand everything the first time around, as was the case in elementary school and middle school. But my more rigorous classes proved to be a challenge for me and I did not know the proper way of learning the material on my own. I started by asking more questions in class and then going to my friends for help on subjects I didn’t understand. After many questions and after school tutor
