Congressmen are always doing things for their reelection. There are three main things that Congressmen do in order to ensure they are reelected. They advertise themselves by getting their name out to make it so they are seen in a positive light. They want to make their intelligence, knowledge, and personality be known in positive ways. Most Congressmen get their name out to their constituents by sending them letters, writing in the local newspaper, going on radio and TV shows, and being involved in the community and in the constituents’ lives. Some Congressmen do unconventional things like crash weddings and parties, and personally meet many of their constituents. Senators are typically more well known than House members because Senators tend to get a few words in with the national media, usually about a bill or policy. Congressmen also credit claim, where they claim credit for things the government does that they like and that goes along with their public opinions and policies. Voters tend to vote for the candidate that has succeeded in the past and if a Congressman credit claims, then they will be seen as though they have succeeded. Congressmen tend to do casework, or favors for their constituents and other people that are small, like letting a high school student interview the Congressman for a school paper. Congressmen are also involved with position taking, where they take a position in some fashion; by giving their vote in a roll call or publicly expressing their position on an issue. It does not matter much if he actually does anything about these positions; it is mostly important that he states his position so to the voters, it will look like he is doing something. People like a Congressman who has positions on issues. The best thing a Congressman can do to make people actually do something about a bill or policy is stress the legislation to the people, and not stress his
