‘Happily ever after’ is a common ending for the happy-go-lucky fairy tales of today. However, if someone digs into the more mysterious stories of the past, they will find something far darker than the Disney princesses. The Grimm Brothers wrote their collection of fairy tales to entertain children, but there are some stories that are way more dangerous than some would expect. Rapunzel is one of those black fairy tales in which the meaning goes down into a well of shady thoughts. Overall, many fairy tales have been a success in modern times, thanks to Disney. However, Disney took the deep-rooted versions of many fairy tales and turned them into something completely different, so the originals aren’t widely known. Some of the more easily spotted similarities are that Rapunzel has long, golden hair, she gets locked in a tower at some point in the story, she sings to pass the time, and the fact that Rapunzel’s hair gets cut at some point in the story. There is also a similar line in both stories: “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair” (Grimm par 3). The differences between the old story and the modern movie are that in the story, rampion start the plot, but in the new movie, it was a magic flower. Another difference is that in the longstanding tale, the girl’s rescuer is a prince, but in Tangled, the rescuer is a criminal. These changes are, naturally, going to be doubted. “However, Ed Catmull, president of Pixar and Disney Animaition Studios, said of the title change: ‘We did not want to be put in a box. Some people might assume it’s a fairytale for girls when it’s not. We want to make movies to be appreciated and loved by everybody’ (Singh par 3). The quote above is trying to cover for Disney’s actions about re-vamping Rapunzel, but not working to hide that fact that they want more from the public ticket sales to the theater. Society, on the whole, is positively impacted, but the movie leaves the smarter ones filled with questions.
