Australia is an amazing country with sandy beaches, great weather and a great cricket team. But if I could change one thing about Australia, it would be so there is no more racism. Roughly 28% of Australian people are born overseas, which makes a multicultural society very important in Australian Culture but this causes racism.

‘Approximately 1 in 5 people and 7 in 10 teens are victim to racism.’ This is truly alarming and worrying for Australia. Racism has been in Australia from the very first settlement in 1788. Britain claimed Australia as ‘terra nullius’ (empty land) even though they knew that aboriginals existed. Also racism stops tourism, according to a study done by the Federal Government, which states that 1 in 3 migrants say that ‘they had been discriminated or racially abused.’ The Australian Government had to supply a $250,000 tourism plan after other countries issued travel warnings after the Cronulla Riots, which shows that racism has economic impacts as well. Racism happens all around us. Recently on the same bus as I catch but different time, this lady started to make racist remarks about a teenage girl by using phrases like 'Go back to where you came from'. Also the lady threatened to spit and sue the unfortunate teenager.

Australia is such a multicultural country that we need to learn to accept other races and different cultures. But how can we stop racism? We as a society can try our best to reduce and eventually stop racism. We can do this by using anti-racism posters we are saying a message to everyone which is vital. Also with the effects of racism being taught in schools, this will eventually help the future generations.

Overall racism is a very harmful issue in Australia due to it being a multicultural and diverse country with different cultures and races. This is why if I could change one thing about Australia, it would be so there is no more racism which can be done if we all work together as
