Racism Exposed In Alice Walker's The Color Purple

Through the century’s males have always presented themselves as the dominant family member. In the book The Color Purple this is no exception, thought the beginning of the book the role of a male is simple, be the father, work, occasionally beat his wife and children maybe even have some more children with his very own children. All these attributes were the normal male role in the south during this time of the book. However, a female role in the book is extraordinary far from easy and simple. A females role is to work on the fields, cook, and clean the house. Male’s role was not entirely free of work, but for the most part, males would hardly ever help in any of the duties that the females were told to do. As for racism, racism for many years before the timeline of the book was an enormous problem in the south. Even during the timeline of this book racism was still a serious problem, in the book racism is shown as a limiting factor on colored people because they can’t do many things in public because fear of discrimination. Most whites portrayed in the book think of themselves as being of more importance than any colored persons. Take the mayor for example, in the book he asks Sofia, a colored female leading character, is asked by the white mayor to be his personal maid, “Sofia and the prizefighter don’t say nothing. Finally she say, Sofia, with a little laugh, This is the South. Yes ma’am, I say. She clear her throat, laugh some more. Look where you sitting, she say. I’m sitting where I always sit, I say. Have you ever seen a white person and a colored lady sitting side by side in a car, when one of 'em wasn’t showing the other one how to drive it or clean it?” (Walker 104) Not only was race a limiting factor for many but so was class. Working class people such as the main protagonist Celie, live their lives only ever visiting people close and hardly get any real education especially if there are female. However in the instance of Celie`s sister Nettie, Nettie runs away from home at a young age and finds herself with a rich colored couple whom with she travels to Africa with and gets an education. This social status is not entirely bias, but for the mostly in the south whites are the rich and elite class. While people of color such as Celie and her friends and family are the lower class, this social classification makes certain groups feel superior to colored minorities.
