History has not always treated women the way it treated men. Female leaders in the past worked very hard to prove themselves as capable as men. They had to be especially skilled. Queen Elizabeth the 1st queen of England 1558-1603 overcame many problems, for example, marriage, image and religion. One of the problems female leaders faced was image. Kings and Queens around the world sent out portraits to their citizens. As Queen Elizabeth grew older she grew uglier, people might think she's weak. To stop this she sent out portraits that didn’t reflect her to keep up her reputation. The objects in her portraits showed different things example in one of her portraits there was a sword that represents power. One of them was that the strong protestants and strong Catholics both wanted different things. Queen Elizabeth was a Moderate Protestant. To solve this she made a religious settlement. The official religion she made England was Protestant, but The religious settlement of 1559 she made was balanced. For example, a rule that made the protestants happy was that the bible was in English. Something that made Catholics happy is that you can wear colourful clothing called vestments and can decorate the church. An Example of an even rule is that the Protestants can preach, but there is a limit. This Links to Empress Wu Zetian. Her problem was that her country was Confucius and Confucians believed that only men could rule, and so when Wu Zetian came into rule they weren’t happy. Wu ZeTian solves this by making her country Buddhist. To do this she made Buddhist sculptures bigger and bolder than the old ones. As you can see Queen Elizabeth and Wu Zetian both used image and their intellect to promote their rules or religious
