Public relations is a very complex practice that utilizes many fields in social sciences and humanities. The multidisciplinary application used by public relations practitioners helps them further understand the people to which they are trying to relay their company’s message to. In my opinion, it is very smart to incorporate research from fields like sociology, psychology, and political science. Without the advancements of these fields public relations would not be as effective as it is today. My duties as an effective communicator could be compromised due to biases I may have. The textbook emphasizes the importance of the ethical tone top management sets. Although public relations practitioners can help give a company a “conscious,” they can not dictate the behavior of their employers. I find this frightening, because I could be an advocate and spokesperson for a set of values that I may not believe in. Newsom was known for being an expert in a crisis or scandal situation. ENCO managed many large corporations, like Ford, as a counselor in public relations. According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, Newsom deeply resented dealing with the press in and this was not in his job description. Our textbook explains how Newsom employed four principles of persuasion, which suggest the client should try to use a personal appeal to gain favor with the public. These four principles are: identification, suggestion of action, familiarity and trust, and clarity. Newson emphasized that it is important to relate the idea back to the interest of the public when employing his principles.
