This semester I have put lots of thought and hard work into trying to write the best papers to my ability, I used many sources; such as, going to the library, looking in newspapers, asking question about the topic and advice from my professor, all these resources have made me a better well round writer.
Going to the library and looking up the topic I needed to write about was fairly easy, but sometimes it leads me nowhere until I really learned how to use all the information the library had to offer. I would sit for hours sometimes just reading about my chosen topic. I found the library to be a good place to just read without interruption, which made it so much less stressful, but when I would hit a dead end I would refer to other resources.

There are colleges in Texas that has been doing this since the year 2000, I was amazed. The newspaper helped me get started on my proposal for my prom dress giveaway. I sad that I never got to turn it in and get it published I was very proud of this essay, but I learned that I can succeed from my failure. I thought the newspaper was a great way to get information for a real life need, on another essay used other resources apart from the newspaper.
I ask questions from my professor taking any advice that she gave me and try to put it into my writing; for example, she helps me look up resources for my homeless proposal essay and my prom dress giveaway. Students, who come from different cultures and backgrounds, are not prepared (especially on their own) to give up everything that they have spent the past eight-teen years believing in, in order to write the perfect college essay.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
Other than learning how to argue (my boyfriend loves my new ability) I learned how to source my research using MLA format. This new skill is tremendously important in college because most professors, if not all, require their papers to be submitted using MLA format. Throughout my upcoming years at Valencia and then The University of Central Florida I will find writing papers significantly easier because sourcing will be practically second nature. In class we were taught how to use the in-text reference throughout our papers, build our own citation and how to set up our work cited page. Although in high school we used the MLA format for papers, prior to taking this class I hadn’t noticed how many small details go into the actual citation, the authors name is last name then first name, the commas must be in the proper place, page numbers etc. In some classes you “learn” how to do things however it is only stored in short term memory because you don’t consider it an important attribute or useful for future classes. Personally, I made sure I knew how to do MLA, every aspect of it, I reviewed the rules, did my assignments, and then reviewed my assignments in order to store this new skill in long term memory. By doing this I have successfully transferred the information to long term memory and made it into a skill.
The Last Time I Wore A Dress written by Daphne Scholinski. This is a touching story about a girl who was taken the wrong way. During the course of her childhood and young adulthood, Daphne fought with recognizing her feelings. Daphne was continually searching for an answer to why she felt fought. Daphne wanted to “blend in” but she knew she was unconventional. The various labels she was given through out her psychiatric break stuck with her and left serious damage of how she was once observed. Daphne had extremely low self-confidence through out her childhood. For the reason, that her parents overlooked her and gave her little affection. “She didn’t even notice when I walked out of her apartment, ran down the stairs,” (Scholinski 4). Her self-esteem was worse at her dad’s house than her moms, however, her relationship with Frank made her very uncomfortable when she would travel into Chicago because she didn’t want to see him. While visiting her mother in Chicago, Daphne kept company with gang members and a much older, lewd hit man. The hit man gave her drugs, money and took her out to dinner with the intent of sexual favors. Daphne desired to be tough; when she was out in the streets with her crew “gang”. She wanted everyone around her to see her toughness. Her gang observed that she was strong in side and out; which made them respect her. The respect given by the gang is why Daphne attempts to act tough at every new place she goes. Daphne wants to earn esteem from them. Daphne knows her appearances favor a boy but the tough character given off by this makes Daphne accept it. Without doubt besides to know how to write a sentence, it is vital to know the parts of an essay. In this course I had the opportunity to go through different types of essays that helped me to understand how an introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion work. Also, how these parts are connected together and make a different function depending of what type of essay I am writing for example, argumentation, narration, process, or any other. Although, I cannot say I became a professional writer after have learned this points, I can say, I became a better one.
Especially with the help of my professor Ms. Piper. I was still having trouble on material on writing, but she helped me by teaching us the writing process, how to revise our drafts, and how to use outlines to help us. She has also taught us ways of breaking down paragraphs in piece of writing to help us understand what we are reading about. I feel with this new approach it opened my eyes on a way to help me excel on my writing, and reading. I am an excellent writer and reader than I was before.
Throughout this semester, I gained skills learned in class and through peer evaluations that improved my writing skills to make my papers more academic. In the beginning of the semester, I was still using old skills that I had in high school for my papers. I would just add sources randomly in papers. This evidence would not flow with the rest of the paper. After adding the evidence from a source, I would just summarize the quote or sentence. Being able to write an exceptionally good paper is important to me in keeping my “A” for English class. There are so many resources available that can help in identifying and improving our weakest skill areas so we can write a properly structured paper. I was able to find many helpful resources that have helped to improve my skill areas in achieving unity in a paper, improving grammatical errors and expanding my vocabulary, and writing a rhetorical analysis,. Many of my resources come from the internet and some came from our textbook, “The Little Seagull.” These resources have been very beneficial to me and have helped me to better understand the mechanics of a well written paper.
In this class I have really learned to use a different level of thinking in my papers. Teachers often have complemented my ability to prove a point with the spoken word, but always offer advice when referencing my ability to compel by the written word. My first lesson in Literature was to bring myself down a level. I used to have an opinion, and write it, never citing or backing it up. My teachers taught me to incorporate others opinions into my own, explaining that until there is a credit to my name, no one is concerned about my opinion without someone credible backing it up. I took that knowledge and used it, learning to be an aggressive researcher, never resting until I have exhausted all sources.
For me, being a college writer means writing well-organized essays that readers enjoy reading. Being a well rounded writer was also important. Each unit in this class challenged me to write in a well-organized, concise way. During each unit, we conducted some sort of revision activity where I was exposed to other students’ writing. As I read their work, I picked up on their use of transition words and separation of paragraphs to make the essay flow. Naturally, I began implementing more transition words in my own work and learned the appropriate ways to split paragraphs. The structure of the class was key to the organization of my ideas which was crucial to the development of my essay. During the third unit of this class, we were asked to identify an issue on campus, conduct research on the issue, and finally propose a solution to correct the issue. At first, it was difficult to get my ideas down and figure out what it was I would research. What I learned in class allowed me to first identify the issue I would research, write a rough draft, and hear what others had written before the final paper was due. This helped me to identify the main points, brainstorm and figure out what additional research I would need to find to support my argument. Being able to organize my thoughts from the beginning made writing the paper a much easier process. This course has helped me to grow as a writer and make
Throughout this course, I have faced many obstacles. One of the biggest struggles I faced was procrastination and being forgetful. I don’t feel that I am an awful writer; I feel that many of my low grade papers come from writing them the night before they were due. I’ve always had problems with writing papers last minute in high school. The difference between the two is that in high school if I didn’t have a paper in on time, I could turn it in late and still receive positive feedback and a pretty decent grade. In this course, it is a big deal to turn in something late. I feel that if I had used my time wisely and paced out the papers that I wrote, they would be better
The first English course I took in college was a basic introduction to writing, during this course we learned how to write a good essay, we learned techniques to improve our writing and we learned how to organize our ideas and put them in a logical manner. I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas.
