We have progressed immensely since time began; either good or bad, it made the world what it is today. In the book Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, is about a futuristic society called “The World State”. In this novel people are modified to fit a certain role in their organized society and have certain moral and ethical beliefs that will be beneficial to the people in charge of their country and those around them. The embryos are modified in a factory-like building to fit into one of their five castes in their society. In this novel, they also do things that may seem inappropriate in today 's world but considered progress in theirs. In Brave New World kids at very young ages are taught to be intimate. The nurse of the school says “‘We had Elementary Sex for the first forty minutes”, she answered” (Huxley 27). In present day children are not thought to be intimate, and in the novel some students laughed at the thought of people being intimate at the age of twenty because it was too old of an age to start. This was their idea of people being in touch with their bodies and also because they had no moral values like we do today. This was mainly not frowned upon in World State because they are also brainwashed into believing that this is okay. Being brainwashed is also a downside to progress in the novel because the citizens of World State have no sense of identity. They can 't feel for themselves or have any feelings towards someone else in
If the world was controlled the way it is in Brave New World many people would see it as progress, while in reality it is a huge setback from where we are. Although there are many improvements that come with progress, there may also be retrogressions such as people taking antidepressants or people being so concerned with other people 's beliefs. In today 's world, people take antidepressants to get rid of certain feelings just like the people of World State take soma to get rid of their feelings. The people controlling World State were so concerned with the moral beliefs their civilians would have, that they just modified them so they wouldn 't have any moral beliefs or have a god. It seems unorthodox then that Ronald Wright asserts the world has fallen into a progress trap, a paradox to how progress is typically portrayed as it contradicts the conventional way life is viewed: as being a natural progression from the outdated and tried towards the new and improved. Wright posits that it is the world’s relentless creation of innovative methods that ironically contributes to the progress trap rather than to progress itself, the intended objective.
