Recommended: Affirmative action in college admissions

Racial realists are strong advocates of colorblind policies. In addition, they have firm beliefs that racism has declined in modern times and that we have ultimately rectified racial injustice. Racial realists hold that past racism is an irrelevant issue exaggerated by activists. Professor smalls describes their rejection of institutional racism in favor of the belief that racism is a “deliberate and intentional behavior by individuals”. Racial realists attribute racial inequalities to lazy, shiftless and pathological behavior by blacks; all in all, they believe it is a moral failure. In lecture, Professor smalls stated that racial realists believe that “race should not be mentioned explicitly ant that racism is not an important issue today”. They identify and highlight continuing racism and demand that questions of race become a larger focal point. They believe that past preferential treatment of whites allowed them to accumulate wealth and political power through “affirmative action”. Furthermore, modern day affirmative action just makes an even playing field. In lecture, Smalls describes how we’ve essentially had affirmative for the last 360 years with naturalization protocols and discriminatory voting rights. This has been kept in check with racial projects and white privilege. With poor blacks being poorer than poor whites and the white habitus harnessing job connections it is easy to see how we have an unfair system. Critical theorists also believe in inter-sectionalism; Kimberly Crenshaw is an example advocate who promotes a view on gender obstacles.     Even though slavery was abolished Jim Crow laws were made illegal years ago, racism is still not gone, and this is Bonilla-Silva’s central argument in his book, “Racism Without Racists.” While racist practices are not as overt nowadays, the covert, institutionalized ways of today’s new racism are just as discriminatory, he argues. One particular sentence that stood out that sums up the first part of his argument is “that the main problem nowadays is not the folks with hoods, but the folks dressed in suits.” Because of this switch to a more covert way of discriminating against people of color, white Americans have become color-blind to racism. In turn, the country is now home to “racism without racists,” which is the second part of the author’s argument. Because racism has become so internalized in our institutions, it can sometimes be hard to recognize, or at least admit to, the discrimination that is so prevalent in the U.S. Because whites either don’t recognize or admit to this racism, they claim that they don’t see color, and that any inequalities that are at play are due to the minorities not working hard enough in our meritocracy.

    Prior to beginning my readings on white racial identity, I did not pay much attention to my white race. If someone had asked me to describe my appearance I would have said short blond hair, blue eyes, average stature, etc. One of the last things I would have noted was the color of my skin. Growing up in overwhelmingly white communities, I never thought to use the color of my skin to differentiate myself from others. Over the course of this dialogue I have learned that my white racial identity is one of the most defining aspects of my appearance in this society. There is a certain level of privilege that I am afforded based solely on the color of my skin. According to Peggy McIntosh, “White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, assurances, tools, maps, guides, codebooks, passports, visas, clothes, compass, emergency gear, and blank checks” (71). All these objects listed by McIntosh are things I have access to and certainly take for granted. Due to a history of non-white racial oppression, which transformed into decades of racial discrimination that still lingers today, the white race has dominated our society in terms of resources and prosperity. The ideas of wealth, higher-level education and ambition to succeed are all traits commonly linked to people of the white race that collectively define privilege.
