Problems Of Gang Violence

“Children caught up in this system are the most vulnerable and yet are the least likely to be represented by the counsel,” (Alexander p.86). Gang violence is something that occurs every single day and can’t seem to be avoided by some despite whether you’re in a gang or not. The children who live in those types of environment are used to seeing violence and drugs around the corner. Then instead of avoiding the problem they decide to make it even worse by joining a gang. For example, in the book, Ghettoside, by Jill Leovy it mentions that one young teenager joined a gang just so he can feel accepted by a group of people just to be a part of something and to have friends. Since the teenager joined the gang he is now involved with any gang activities even if he wasn’t there. He was now part of a group that has rivals and that isn’t a good thing because they don’t care who you are they will still kill you where you stand. In recent news police brutality is becoming a big problem in the U.S and when the news comes out it seems to always show someone of dark pigmentation. So the people who are being portrayed as criminals are those who are not white such as Blacks and Hispanics. According to Michelle Alexander she wrote “black men have been admitted to prison on drug charges at the rates twenty to fifty times greater than those of white men.” In The New Jim Crow it also mentions that “80 percent of young African American men now have criminal records.” Now that information brings us back to social media because when people hear or see that someone of color did a dangerous thing then they’ll be like oh that’s typical. So if the media can brainwash people into thinking that everyone of color is dangerous then people of color will act that way. It messes with their mind and they start thinking that is how they are supposed to be unless they somehow manage to ignore on how social media is portraying
