The internet is a powerful invention that allows people to communicate, shop online, have entertainment, and explore the world. The net is being used for many valuable purposes, but the service of the internet raises a number of ethical issues such as privacy in social networking sites. Today’s revolution in social communication involves security and confidentiality of data. Privacy is a valuable tool that humans need in order to protect themselves from privacy violations. Personal data can be utilized to influence online users’ reputation in social networking sites, e.g., Facebook. However, personal information can be used to bring harm to online users.
On the other hand, these benefits can be recognized only if the problems are solved. In what follows, I first develop one of the most important arguments in favor of privacy which is the protection from the misuse of personal information. There are numerous ways an online user can be hurt by the disclosure of touchy individual data, such as medicinal records and mental tests. Kisekka (2013) argues that “Information sharing on online social networks affords numerous benefits to users, although sharing too much information increases the likelihood of privacy and security attacks” (2722). Then, I address the claim that privacy and trust reduces online growth. In Tores’s (2012) discussion of privacy on Facebook “The literature highlights that privacy is often considered the number one obstacle to online growth” (90). The disclosure of such data can leave the subjects helpless against a lot of misuse. Enough data is required for appropriate judges, but irrelevant use of that information leads to noxious results. For instance, there is a lot of misconception in our general public about psychological instability and the individuals who experience this illness. The personal connection Americans have with their phones, tablets, and computers; and the rising popularity of online shopping and social websites due to the massive influence the social media has on Americans, it is clear why this generation is called the Information Age, also known as Digital Age. With the Internet being a huge part of our lives, more and more personal data is being made available, because of our ever-increasing dependence and use of the Internet on our phones, tablets, and computers. Some corporations such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook; governments, and other third parties have been tracking our internet use and acquiring data in order to provide personalized services and advertisements for consumers. Privacy is dead and corporations, governments, and third parties murdered it for their personal gain not for the interest of the public as they claim. There are more disadvantages than advantages on letting corporations, governments, and third parties track and acquire data to personalized services and advertisements for us.
The Internet offers many benefits but it also creates many threats that undermines our personal privacy. Concerns about loss of privacy are not new. But the computer's ability to gather and sort vast amounts of data and the Internet's ability to distribute it globally magnify those concerns [1]. Privacy concerns on the Internet are centered on improper acquisition, improper use of personal information such as intrusions, manipulation, discrimination, identity theft, and stalking of personal information. Today the Internet stretches our geographic boundaries and force us to deal with global ethic based on moral principles held to be valid across the cultures. Due to the nature of the Internet, our personal information may be transmitted over the internet and that the transfer of personal information may be made to any country in the world, regardless of the extent of any data protection laws and regulations in any of those countries.
Privacy is a value we hold close and dear as a society. We do not advertise to others of our weaknesses or our confidential personal interactions. Most of the population does not want to get involved or want to know about other private issues. So privacy can protect the rest of us from being exposed of too much personal information. Autonomy allows us to speak out about injustices and ability for self-expression. The irony is that we feel safest when we know everything about them but they know nothing about you. Here is where a fine line is drawn between privacy and security. Privacy is built from a level of trust. As one’s trust level increases through ongoing relations, the self-guarded privacy begins to fade. When privacy and/ or trust have been compromised then relations are broken and the safe-guards are back in place.
Terms and Laws have gradually change overtime dealing with different situations and economic troubles in the world in general. So then dealing with these issues the workplace has become more complex with little or no rights to privacy. Privacy briefly explained is a person’s right to choose whether or not to withhold information they feel is dear to them. Perhaps the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, said it best when he claimed that privacy is no longer a “social norm.” Virtually everyone has a smart phone and everyone has social media. We continue to disclose private information willingly and the private information we’re not disclosing willingly is being extracted from our accounts anyway. Technology certainly makes these things possible. However, there is an urgent need to make laws and regulations to protect against the stuff we’re not personally disclosing.
