Primer Paint Case Study

Introduction Primer paint is used to improve paint adhesion. At ZMD, an aerospace company manufacturing commercial aircrafts, primer paints are applied to several aircraft components. ZMD’s Aircraft_Series_900 design specifications calls for a primer paint, with a minimum adhesion force of 4.0N. As a process engineer at ZMD, I am conducting this study to identify areas of opportunities for quality improvement. For this purpose, I have taken the initiative in researching the alternative brands to the primer paint currently used. To analysis these brands, I have requested for sample data for three alternatives along with the one currently in use. On the basis of data, my main objective to see which primer including the one that is in use, gives The mean adhesion force for the Primer 2 is 5.2 while the one we are using currently has a mean adhesion force of 4.8. But if we look at the prices of each of these primer paints, we see that Primer 2 is the most expensive. This is makes sense also because the brand that gives the highest mean adhesive force is the expensive. The current primer in use has the second highest price of $50.12. It looks that we can use the Primer 2 even if its expensive because it will then give us the highest adhesion force as well and thus would be beneficial in long run. To be sure about which brand to use, we will first use the ANOVA test to compare and see whether there is significant difference between primer paints at 0.05 significance level. Total Variable Count Mean Variance Sum Current Primer 10 4.8100 0.0610 48.1000 Primer 1 10 4.620 0.124 Since the p-value (0.00) is less than the 0.05 level of significance, the primer paints are statistically significant and null hypothesis is different from zero. In addition to this analysis, we can also check the t-test for the paired mean samples for the primer currently in use and the one which has the highest mean adhesion force (Primer 2). From the table below, we can say that there is significant difference in the mean adhesion force of two primers and hence the null hypothesis is significantly different from zero. Again, the p-value is less than the 0.05 level of significance; we can support the evidence of difference in the mean adhesion force of the primer we are using currently and the one which has the highest mean.
