What is prejudice? Prejudice is defined as an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. There are various types of prejudice. For example, the most common ones are race, financial situation, such as lower, middle, and upper classes, and ethnicity. Another type of prejudice is when someone is judged strictly by the way they look. One firm example would be men having long hair. To many people, this type seems eccentric; however, it is more typical than presumed. I have witnessed this type of prejudice firsthand. My boyfriend has longer hair than I and for this reason, he has been discriminated against many times. For instance, many people assume he uses drugs because he has long hair. One example is when I was told that I shouldn't date him because he probably uses drugs. The only reason this person had for making this assumption was the fact that he had long hair. One form of prejudice is racism. Racism is negative attitudes and values held by people about other people based on their race. It is this attitude which causes one to discriminate against another. Discrimination is treating people unfavorably on the basis of race, color or sex. Prejudice and discrimination were prevalent in the 1950s and 1960s. This era was a time of hatred, a time of violence, a time when black people were colonized by the white colonizer, and it was a time of white-on-black racial violence. Because of this hatred, the whites discriminated against the blacks.
Because no research has been made regarding hair colour discrimination, the main aim of this research will be to collect and analyse the data, so future research will be possible. Without providing empirical evidence that discriminations against redheads exist, it is not possible to continue exploring the discrimination effects on psychological development among redheads. Most importantly, prejudice against redheads is the most neglected area of prejudice, and people should be more open about it than about political, racial, religious, and other forms of prejudice, so future research could perhaps provide insight into variables that influence the formation of prejudices which researchers in other forms of appearance-based prejudices have missed.

Because of my dark skin, I would be considered less than if I was next to a white person. This is the same for a lot of things, not just race. A lot of people have stereotypes toward older people and disabled people. If I were to see someone older than me, I’d automatically assume they are very incapable, the same with people who have disabilities. I would be completely wrong to assume such things, because these people might be just as, if not more active than me. Someone with a prosthetic leg can be prepping for a marathon and I don’t know that, I just assume that that person can’t even walk. Stereotypes are a strong factor in all things. I have not known one person that has not ever had a stereotype toward another person, myself included. In our society, stereotyping is the norm, we are just starting to recognized how bad it is. It’s hard to not stereotype, because if we meet someone we have to form some kind of opinion. A lot of the opinions we come up with are based off of stereotypes. Being prejudiced usually means having preconceived beliefs about groups of people or cultural practices. Discrimination is the "differential and unequal treatment of other groups of people, usually along racial, religious or ethnic lines." Gorham defines stereotypes as the organization of beliefs and assumptions people have toward social groups (19). Stereotypes can often be misrepresentative of a particular group because people unknowingly make assumptions about other people based on the knowledge they have acquired from media and/or people not in that particular social group. It is an emotional response including but not limited to hate, disgust, and/or fear when interacting with or thinking about an individual that is apart of a certain group. They act upon their prejudices, and behave in a way that is hurtful to a certain group or helpful to a favorable group. All three are seen in the movie, Schindler’s List.
Prejudice can be caused because of various reasons. Religion, ethnic race and social status are examples of causes of prejudice. Sometimes prejudice is caused by how we are raised. Many times parents pass on prejudice beliefs to their children. A lot people raised in the southern part of the country are prejudice against blacks. In the early to mid 1960’s, prejudice was alive and well in the south. Blacks had their own bathrooms and were forced to ride in the back of city busses. It’s hard to believe that was doing on only 40 years ago. A lot of Middle Eastern countries are very prejudice against women.
