Ever judge someone by how they act or by what they say? In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, two kids must face some ugly things thrown at them by the town and their own relatives, just because their father, Atticus Finch, is defending an African-American. This all takes place in the south during the Great Depression in the 1930 's when Alabama was still a segregated state. When you get to know the characters and start comparing them you start to realize why they all act this way towards them. Lee uses characterization to show how prejudice and superstition can influence people’s behavior in a negative way. Early in the story, Lee introduces two classes of people. After Dill and Scout step out of the courtroom they meet Dolphus and that’s when he explains why he acts the way he does. As the narrator states, “I try to give ‘em a reason, you see. It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason. When I come to town, which is seldom, if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond’s in the clutches of whiskey-that’s why he won’t change his ways. He can’t help himself, that’s why he lives the way he does” (200). This shows that the people of Maycomb are perfectly capable of understanding why something is, yet they need a reason as to why a white man hangs out with colored folk. After Scout talks some sense into Walter he tells everyone to leave and when they do Mr. Underwood appears and starts to talk to Atticus. As the narrator states, “Mr. Underwood and a double-barreled shotgun were leaning out his window above The Maycomb tribune office.” (155). Underwood may not like colored folks, but he is a true believer in justice and in speaking the truth so he would much rather see Tom in court having a fair trial, than just simply lynching him. When Atticus and his brother are talking, Atticus explains why he had to defend Tom. What people think and say about you can really influence what you do. Whether they choose to follow what they say is up to the person. When people are raised without love in their life, everything is very different to them. When this happens they are most likely not going to understand other people’s feelings. To understand a person you have to know their life story. The person will act a certain way because of things that have happened in their life and because you most likely do not know what happened, you make inferences.
