Teen pregnancies are rapidly affecting lives in Canada and surrounding countries, for the worse. Teenagers deciding to keep their baby does not only affect the teenager, but it affects the economy, the teenagers parents, and the baby’s future. When a teenager decides to have a child she is giving up her education, and future careers. Teen pregnancy is steadily increasing across Manitoba and eastern Canada. Girls aged 15-19 are more likely to get pregnant because there are fewer education or career options. Many teenagers don’t return to school, even when there are options of doing so. Many teenage pregnancies happen within the first six months of intercourse, and ninety five percent of the pregnancies are unplanned. Teens are less likely to become pregnant if they are involved in volunteer work or a religious community. It is their parents jobs to encourage them to join these things. Drugs and alcohol also increase sexual activity, which can lead to unprotected sex and unplanned pregnancies. If teens continue to use drugs and alcohol being unaware that they are pregnant, it can affect the unborn child. “A teenager may suffer an emotional crisis if she becomes pregnant and does not want the baby. As teenagers are not physically or emotionally able to have children, it can affect the child’s development. There are risks for both mother and child during the pregnancy and future, such as: premature birth, delay of education, depression, or even neglect. Babies born to teenage mothers are more likely to acquire difficulty with cognitive, language, social, and emotional skills. These skills help prepare children for school. “The Urban Child Institute reports that they are more likely to dropout of school, have more health problems, face unemployment and become teen parents themselves.” (UCI, 2017) It’s not being a teenager and having a baby that affects the child, but rather the circumstances that the child has to live in. Since most teen mothers live off of help from family, they don’t have an education, and they don’t have a solid career, the child isn’t getting the proper attention it needs.
