Predator and Prey: An Analysis on Rape Culture in The Modern World

We tend to think that we have evolved as a species. We've put a man on the moon, but when it comes to treating humans equally regardless of creed we are unable to do such simple acts.This is most evident in the way society, specifically modern westernized culture treats gender and violence. When it comes to gender and it's ugly bi-products we seems to have not progressed much, especially when talking about rape and who to blame. In modern society we almost always tend to place the blame entirely on the victim. We tend to see women as less than men, we still in many ways see them as property or “prey”. Thinking back on it now I can see her maternal instincts kicking in, like a lioness protecting her young cub. He lurked behind us, grinning, and making remarks at my mother about her appearance. Suddenly the hunt ended when we arrived at the park, where a cop car was patrolling. It was after that that my mother told me “ If anyone ever tries to touch you scream fire as loud as you can!”. I was completely perplexed by this idea. “Why would I scream fire when there isn't one? That doesn't seem very nice!”. How do you explain to a child that someone's inanimate possessions are valued more than her life? How do you explain to a child who knows no evil that some people’s most pleasurable and greatest fantasies are to harm her? When we look at many fairy tales however their narratives seem to be quite damaging to a young child's pliable moral compass. All though the messages are subliminal and not direct they play a major role in how we as a society think. In the fairy tale Little Red Ridding hood we see how the blame of rape is put entirely on the victim. Little Red is taught not to go off wandering the woods alone for she might be attacked by the savage wolf. When young Red in her naive nature decides to go out anyway, she is manipulated and eventually ‘devoured’ by the wolf. This story teaches us that it's the girl’s fault for venturing out into the woods rather than the wolf who manipulated and assaults her.
