Praying for an A What is identity? Identity is who someone is and how they exemplify it. In today's society we have leaders and followers, those who lead have created their own identity, and the followers are finding theirs. Some people believe identity is by genetics, some say they are created within time and others reckon identity is thrust upon someone influenced by another. Does anyone ever truly create their own identity or do they gain their identity completely from genetics? While parents contribute small amounts of genetic make-up, individuals and communities need beliefs, expressions, and decision making to form an identity. Individuals forming collective whole, working together, the Union High School Marching band is created by the individual decision. The individual could be influenced by genetics acquired regarding music ability. It all starts with the individual decision and their identity to contribute to the whole. Robin D.G. Kelly lived with the question "what are you?" all his life. "Are you Puerto Rican? Dominican? Indian or something?" was heard plenty of times. The social status is often determined by color and personality by the way a person acts. "... a nondescript way of talking, walking, and being that made us..." is what performs our identity in the littlest of ways (Kelly 446-447). When asked he responds with answers regarding race, religion, and genetics. He also tells them not to ask "...unless you're ready to sit through a long-ass lecture"(Kelly 449).
