What is power? Power has no exact definition, as show by the movie “Chocolate y Fresa”. In the movie “Fresa y Chocolate” a homosexual artist named Diego tries to seduce David who is a straight young man who happens to be communist, David is only interested in Diego so that he can monitor Diego’s flamboyant lifestyle. But as they begin to discuss politics in communist Cuba they begin to develop a legitimate friendship. Power is show many different ways throughout the movie and according to Foucault, “power is everywhere”. The theory that this essay will be about is the theory by Michael Foucault which states “power is everywhere”, and also the theory that goes along with Foucault’s that is, “every interaction has a struggle for power” (Bakhtin) as said by Russian philosopher, Mikhail Bakhtin. The theory means that whenever two people meet, at some point in their conversation one will try to become the alpha male. This all stems from Fidel Castro’s communist ways in Cuba. Everyone who lives in Cuba are all forced to believe in no religion and everyone is supposed to be the same and bow down to their dictator. Therefore, this causes rebellions to occur in which people want more power than the others so they try to fight against the communism ways, these rebellions are led by power thirsty individuals which usually ends in death or being sent to isolation. In the movie “Fresa y Chocolate” Diego is considered a rebel being that he is gay and that is not allowed in Cuba being that it’s a communist country. After reading the articles from Martí and Foucault, it made it easier to notice and understand why it deals with power. The term from Foucault, “power is everywhere” (Foucault) reoccurs constantly throughout the movie because in Diego’s apartment it is very relevant that power is everywhere in his apartment.
