The documentary titled Poverty Inc really exposed the audience to a new perspective on poverty-related issues in third world countries. Poverty Inc explained a narrative about the positives and negatives that “outsiders” coming in could do to a community. Many natives explained their satisfaction and displeasure of such individuals swooping in to save the day. In this documentary, there were many lessons to be learned about community assets mapping, direct action, and organizing. Poverty Inc shined on the of the most important things that individuals could learn about in impoverished countries; we should never pretend that we know what is best in a community that we enter. This type of commitment requires individuals to be truly be invested in the well-being of these countries. It is not enough for volunteers and organization to focus on sending shoes, clothes, and bags of food into a country. An in-depth approach to direct action requires that NGO’s propel small business to thrive in the marketplace by providing them the appropriate resources to do so. As reiterated in the Poverty Inc documentary, these countries are entrapped and must sustain a living off others while they want to provide for themselves. The people residing in these countries do not want to be “beggars” for their whole life, they are seeking that opportunity to excel in the marketplace. Volunteers should focus on action organizing focused on sustainability in these communities. To sustain these communities, NGO’s should promote small business growth, entrepreneurs, and partnership with local community members. However, these volunteers also must keep in mind that the community members know more than they do about the community. Individuals should not only focus on “doing favorable effect,” but should channel these passions into fruitful causes, such as asset mapping.
