The Effects of Poverty: Come Together to Help People in Need Do you ever take things in your daily life for granted? Many people are living day by day not having a stable amount of money to support themselves and their families. This lack of money can advance into many different problems. Health problems can arise from not having proper resources such as food and medical assistance. Poverty also affects people’s social and emotional stability. Social classes also play a part in how these people can find help with organizations in the United States. The lack of money that these families have can cause challenges with health care and staying healthy. To start off, health care is not cheap. If people are not able to afford healthcare it can lead to bigger problems. If children and parents are not having proper checkups, they might not know their health status. This also can relate to having proper health at home. If parents cannot afford food, this can lead to children becoming malnourished (Hayasaki). This is a big problem in poverty because every day 800 million people do not know where their next meal is coming from. In addition, improper nutrition causes more than 3 millions deaths a year. This fight against poverty drains children and parents. Children that go through poverty are at a disadvantage when it comes to their academic capabilities. It can be hard for them to focus and to follow directions, which will determine how they succeed in their later years. Likewise, living through poverty can have some challenges at home. There most likely is more violence and destructive behavior which impacts the young brain. This makes it even harder for the brain to connect and form fluently (Hayasaki). “The study published in JAMA pediatrics in 2015, examined 389 people between 4 and 22 years old. A quarter of the participants came from homes well below the federal poverty level ($24,230 annual income for a family of four in 2016). Children from the poorest backgrounds showed greater diminishment of gray matter and scored lower on standardized tests” (Hayasaki). These studies show just how much the amount of income in a household can determine how people succeed. The changes that poverty makes on the brain can cause people’s social interactions to be different than a person who is not living through poverty. New ways to face the challenge of poverty can really make a main point to focus on how people develop socially and emotionally.
