The risk factors associated with the causes of intellectual disabilities are: 1. Biomedical factors relate to genetic disorders, nutrition, and other biologic processes. These occur early in child’s development. An example of this is a when a part of a chromosome is missing or is duplicated due to how much a parent contributes genetically, also known as a chromosome disorder. 2. Social factors relate to familial and social interactions. This can occur in conjunction with any of the risk factors. An example of social influence would be a lack of interaction by parents or caregivers or not having your needs met as an infant. 3. Behavioral factors relate to what affects the mother during pregnancy and the mother and infant after birth. This can occur in conjunction with any of the other risk factors. Effects of this factor can occur from the time this child is in utero to early childhood and beyond. An example of when this could be a mother drinking while a child is in utero causing fetal alcohol syndrome. 4. …show more content…

Educational factors relate to the development of adaptive skills with educational supports being available to children. This can occur in conjunction with any of the other risk factors. An example of this would be a mother not being well supported in this area, or being undereducated, and thus not being able to fully support and advocate for their child as well. A risk factor that can affect social, behavioral, and educational factor, even more, is poverty levels. Poverty can affect children and their parents in many ways that will also affect their development in the areas of cognitive development, along with physical and mental health.
