The major task of the designer of any movie poster is to make the poster visually interesting, so that it captures the attention of its viewers. When people first glance at a movie poster, what catches their eye? What draws them in and makes them want to immediately purchase a ticket? Is it the usage of bright colors (or lack thereof), certain actors or directors they like, or is it the overall design of the poster? While certain posters leave a lot to the imagination in terms of what the movie is about, the movie poster for The Expendables 2 efficiently introduces the audience to what they can expect from the film.

The phrase, “Back for War,” is to the left of the main character, letting viewers know this movie is a continuation to the battle introduced by the first movie. Most movie posters include a symbol of some kind. Although there is no specific symbol depicted on the poster, the graphic is full of symbolism. This essay is an analysis of two advertising posters, one of being a modern piece of media, the other being aimed at the previous generation. I will be reviewing posters from Coca Cola and Benetton, the latter being the modern piece of media in this comparison.
The first material a viewer will see is the individual strings of the large patches. These patches are all over the advertisement. Other patches on the advertisement are the yellow Utah shaped street sign with the sports bike inside to symbolize the motorcyclist who ride in Utah. Another major material used is the black leather jacket background. Every motorcyclist knows that a leather jacket is a clear sign of a motorcyclist who is either a casual cruiser rider or a one percenter. One percenters are the notoriously bad stereotypical Harley Davidson riders who sell drugs, guns, and murder. Textures such as the scaleness of the leather provide a feel to the advertisement. Both of these designers are well known for contributing unique designs to the film industry. They supplied their artistic talent by creating movie posters and title sequences, which are important because they set expectations and make an audience excited for motion pictures. Often people say the phrase “never judge a book by its cover”, but in the film industry the posters and trailers can sometimes affect the outcome of success or failure a movie has.

In the advertisement they have different pictures from the movie of sword fighting and also characters in the film. Also the advertisement’s background is blood red. As soon as you look at it you can tell that this movie is an intense action film. The Kill Bill magazine advertisement accomplishes its purpose very well by its eight person sword fight picture, explosive entertainment, and catchy background.

[IMAGE]The major forms and conventions of film posters could include: A large title which attracts the eye, bold colours which stand out from the background, intriguing picture which would attract viewers to the film, persuasive language which might persuade the viewers to go and see the film, using the main character's name for promotion, and the certification will either to ensure that the right type of people are watching the film. An example of how different types of film (e.g. comedy, horror) poster use these forms and conventions to attract a certain type of person (e.g. teenagers, horror fans) would be a really scary horror film, which will use eerie images in order to appeal to horror fans. The advertisement project was a great learning experience on learning what it takes to produce a print ad, and getting harsh feed back from the consumer. The project exposed how hard it is to actually produce a good advertisement that will pop to the consumers eye and reel them in to have interest in buying the product your trying to sell them. In my groups jean print advertisement we used a method from Arthur Asa Berger’s book Ads, Fads, and Consumer Culture. We in particular used chapter four, “Running it up a flagpole to see if anyone salutes”, in this chapter Berger says choose a way you want to do an advertisement and do it. The consumer will either like it or not it’s a 50/50 gamble. All you can do is what you think will work and run with it. And that’s basically the approach we had from the minute we were posed with the project. Since we didn’t feel like playing the sex sells card, the group and I felt that chapter four of Berger’s book was the best to use to produce our advertisement. While we learned a lot from this project in understanding advertising and consumer culture, the aspects of the project ranged from the original concept to the survey results of the responses from consumers.
