HIV is a devastating virus that affect nearly 35.3 million individuals worldwide (Fuller). The devastation of this virus ranks alongside with some of the most deadly threats to human life such as terrorist activities, biological threats and nuclear technology (Smith). HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus and is what will eventually lead to AIDS or acquired immune deficiency syndrome ( HIV”).The HIV virus slowly destroy the CD4 cells of the immune system. This will eventually leave the body defenseless and prone to opportunistic infections that the body could otherwise fight. These opportunistic infections will quickly lead to death. HIV is a serious threat to human life. Since its first reported case nearly 30 years ago AIDS has claimed 36 million lives as well as present day infected 35.3 million individuals around the world (Fuller). Not only does this devastating virus impact human life, but it also threatens nation economies and political stability by robbing society of its most productive members.
HIV can easily be spread from person to person through sexual contact as well as contact with other body fluids such as breast milk or blood. An individual with HIV will most likely never experience any symptoms for as much as 10 years.(“HIV”). This makes it very easy to spread the virus to others. Most commonly younger individuals contract the disease however anybody can get HIV. In developed countries like the United States, a individuals with HIV can live about the normal life expectancy with some help of medication that significantly slow the progression of HIV into AIDS. n some countries people would do anything to receive any type of health care to keep themselves and their families alive and healthy, but most of them barely even have water to drink. Here in America we have healthcare right at our fingertips and sometimes take it for granted. A central issue that we as a whole see lacking is compassion and dignity throughout our health care. Rafael Campo and Tony Kushner seem to bring that more into focus between their writings. For example in the poem Curing AIDS by Campo just shows how self-centered and ignorant some people are. “A hypocrite across the room complains that it’s her right to walk away- to walk away is her right”. She is basically saying she wants them to just turn their back to healthcare.

HIV, also known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. If left untreated, HIV reduces the number of CD4 cells in the body, which makes a person more likely to get infections or infection-related cancers. According to Avert, 2.6 million people became infected with HIV in 2009, there are now an estimated 33.3 million people around the world who are living with HIV. In 1981, was the beginning of what is commonly known now today as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, which is one of the biggest epidemics of history (1). As of today, there is over 1.1 million people in the United States living with HIV/AIDS (1). Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV is a complex immune virus that is capable of destroying ones immune system, leaving there body defenseless. As a result of a deficient immune system there is a whole plethora of comorbidities that accompany the HIV virus. It has been reported the HIV-1 and HIV-2 are the more virulent. With no cure, there are only current medications that help depresses the progression of the virus, and with very little signs and symptoms it is easily transmitted. Even though there are no direct physical therapy interventions for people with HIV, certain physical therapy protocols can help depress the progressive destruction of the virus along with keeping the comorbidities at bay.
The AIDS virus is the most common disease, and with no cure, an infected person will die. It is estimated that 90 to 95 percent of AIDS infections occur in developing countries where the world’s worst living conditions exist.

Without proper knowledge and equipment, it is very difficult to prevent the spread of AIDS. Ever since the illness was discovered thirty years ago, it has taken the lives of thirty million people and affected the lives of many, many more. The AIDS pandemic has been and still is most severe in third-world countries in sub-Saharan Africa. It has impacted the economies of entire nations by crippling and killing individuals in the most productive years of their lives (“HIV/AIDS”). AIDS greatly influences the government sector, agricultural sector, private corporations, and individual households.
The emergence of HIV/AIDS is viewed globally as one of the most serious health and developmental challenges our society faces today. Being a lentivirus, HIV slowly replicates over time, attacking and wearing down the human immune system subsequently leading to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) at which point the affected individual is exposed to life threatening illnesses and eventual death. Despite the fact that a few instances of this disease have been accounted for in all parts of the world, a high rate of the aforementioned living with HIV are situated in either low or medium wage procuring nations. The Sub-Saharan region Africa is recognized as the geographic region most afflicted by the pandemic. In previous years, people living with HIV or at risk of getting infected did not have enough access to prevention, care and treatment neither were they properly sensitized about the disease. These days, awareness and accessibility to all the mentioned (preventive methods, care etc.) has risen dramatically due to several global responses to the epidemic. An estimated half of newly infected people are among those under age 25(The Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic). It hits hard as it has no visible symptoms and can go a long time without being diagnosed until one is tested or before it is too late to manage.
