Act 1 of Mr. Burns was the only act in the play that places it characters in a casual setting. It was easy to decipher the type of characters the actors were portraying in the scene. For example, the actor who played a meek character ported this by taking up as little space as she could and crouching behind objects. Also, two characters were pretty intimate with each other. They cuddled around the fire when discussing the probability of a power plant shutting down and shared soft smiles with each other. The stories "Barn Burning" written by William Faulkner and "Paul's Case" written by Willa Cather both have two separate characters with very similar troubles. Each has a uniquely sad narrative. "Barn Burning" is a sad story because it not only shows the classical struggle between the underprivileged and the privileged classes, but also the struggle between a father and his son, Sarty. Together, these two boys share comparable lifestyles. Each has conflicts with his father, fantasize of a wealthier existence, and flee from the tribulations in his life.

In “Barn Burning” the setting is a time when people drove horse wagons and the workingmen were generally farmers. The major character in this story is Colonel Sartoris Snopes, called “Sarty” by his family who is a ten-year-old boy. In the beginning, Sarty is portrayed as a confused and frightened young boy. He is in despair over the burden of doing the right thing or sticking by his family, as his father states,” You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain’t going to have any blood to stick to you.”

William Faulkner elected to write “Barn Burning” from his young character Sarty’s perspective because his sense of morality and decency would present a more plausible conflict in this story. Abner Snopes inability to feel the level of remorse needed to generate a truly moral predicament in this story, sheds light on Sarty’s efforts to overcome the constant “pull of blood”(277) that forces him to remain loyal to his father. As a result, this reveals the hidden contempt and fear Sarty has developed over the years because of Abner’s behavior.

Snopes pushes her aside and tells Sartoris to get a can of oil from the barn. Sartoris has a fantasy of running away but returns with the can of oil. Snopes tells his mother to hold Sartoris, knowing he will try to stop him from burning the barn. Snopes heads out to the barn and Sartoris begins to resist. Finally, escaping from the grasp of Snopes’s mother, Sartoris heads to Major De Spain’s home to warn him. The mother and aunt is unable to stop Sartoris. Bursting into the house of Major De Spain, he warns them about the barn. Running back onto the road, Major De Spain’s horse catches up
This book was quite fascinating, but depressing as well. I have a picture of a boarding school because in the beginning of this novel Jam Gallahue talks about being sent to one in Vermont called The Wooden Barn. She was sent their by her parents because of “the lingering effects of trauma.” (Wolitzer 1) The reason she is so sensitive is because of a guy named Reeve Maxfield, a 10th grade foreign exchange student from London.
