Accomplishments of Greek City-States

Greek city-states, also known as polis were one of the most accomplished civilizations in the world, and had a great influence on other civilizations as well. The Greek civilization accomplished a lot politically, in science, and art. The Athenians were able to accomplish a lot with the use of their wealth, philosophers, and the establishment of democracy.
One of the greatest accomplishments of the Athenians was establishing democracy in the Greek city-states, which took more than one hundred years. (Hansen and Curtis 161). These philosophers debated on various topics, questioning, and reasoning. Athens was home to many great and well-known philosophers, including Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Socrates never wrote down anything, however his student, Plato did. Therefore, Plato's writing accounts are used to get information on Socrates and his teachings. "Socrates perfected a style of teaching, now known as the Socratic method, in which the instructor asks the student questions without revealing his own views" (Hansen and Curtis 165). One of the great Greek philosophers, Aristotle, was very observant and contributed to the findings of science.
