Plato Study Questions

1a. Describe the clarification of goods that Socrates sketches at the beginning of Book II of the Republic. In what category of goods does Socrates place justice? What is the popular view of justice described by Glaucon?
1b. Socrates states that goods can come in 3 forms such as: intrinsic goods, which are harmless pleasures, intrinsic and instrumental good, such as health and knowledge, and finally he states the third being instrumental goods, which is health and exercise. Socrates believes Justice should fall into the second category with both intrinsic and instrumental goods. Glaucon states that the popular view of justice is that justice is there be not because it’s something good to do, but because people are scared that unjust things will be done to them.

Plato defines the classes in the ideal city as: rulers, the people, and soldiers. His three factors of the soul are: reason, spirit, and appetite. Plato believes a human being is said to be just only when all parts work together in harmony for the better of the person.
3a. In Book IV, Plato discovers the real nature of justice and provides a defense of justice an intrinsic good for the one who possess it. What is justice for Plato? How does Plato’s discovery of justice work to provide a defense of the virtue against Thrasymachus?
3b. Plato believes that it is in everyone’s own personal interest to be just rather than unjust. Socrates states that there is a difficult and extreme effort needed to gain knowledge of the three forms, and states the just person will go after learning rather than indulging in the desires that lead to unjust actions.
