The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) currently recognizes 48 unique rabbit breeds. Each breed requires specific care and needs to stay well maintained and at their best health. What most new rabbit owners do not realize is that owning a rabbit requires long-term commitment and major responsibility. A well cared for indoor rabbit can live up to 8-12 years. Rabbits are the 3rd most abandoned pets with dogs and cats being in 1st and 2nd. Especially near Easter day, many people impulsively purchase rabbits to later realize that they can’t nor do not want to care for them any longer. There are several options to house rabbits inside. They can live in a bunny-proofed room or they can be contained within a bunny condo. If you are free-roaming your rabbit within a room, make sure the room is bunny-proofed by tucking away any cables or wires they can have access to chew on. You can also cover wires with hard plastic sleeves or flex tubing which can be purchased at any hardware, home improvement or electronics store. Also, have baseboard and molding protection. They will be frequently chewed on if precautions aren’t taken. You can protect your baseboards by covering them up with plastic guards. Houseplants are extremely toxic to rabbits if ingested so it’s best to keep them out of their reach. Poinsettias, tomato leaves, and tulips are among the plants toxic to your rabbit. Blocking off some sections of the room can be helpful too. Some rabbits can jump 36 inches or higher and their curiosity brings them to the top of shelves, chairs, and desks. If you are planning on purchasing a cage rather than to free-roaming; then, their space should always be large enough, so they can hop around. You should always avoid cages with wired bottoms and go towards ones with solid flooring. Wired bottom cages can irritate the feet and cause bacterial infections.
