The Importance of Synthetic Phonics for Young Learners How we learn to read is an essential part of our learning process. The words we read are made up of symbols, which make English sounds. The relationships between the symbols and the speech sounds they make, is a code, which can and does take time to crack. Synthetic Phonics is a method of teaching young learners, to help them crack the code, and help them to progress with learning the English language. An important element of learning to read and spell is synthesizing and blending together the sounds the letters make.
There are a broad number of methods available to teachers, and each situation and student may require differentiated instruction (Marsh, 2010). The Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted) (2010) states that phonics is a fundamental first skill in learning to read. Correspondingly, the NTDET (2010) stresses that systematically teaching students phonics awareness is pivotal in teaching students to read. Besides phonics teaching, the NTDET stress that comprehension is a vital aspect of reading to teach students (2010). Preschool, kindergarten, and first grade are essential years in children’s life for learning how to read and understanding the basic fundamentals of language arts. Some of these concepts include letter recognition, sight word recognition, capitalization, punctuation, and reading fluency. Everything that children learn during these important years will follow them the rest of their lives. Reading and writing must start with the very basics of letter identification and then progress to writing and reading words and sentences. It is important for children to have a positive learning experience because reading is a very important skill that will continually be needed in everyday life.
Content based or enriched English as a Second Language instruction is an approach that provides second language learners with instruction in content and language. In this approach, students are exposed to a considerable amount of English through motivating content. Students are taught useful language that is embedded within relevant context rather than as isolated language. This approach tries to prepare students to acquire the language while using the context of any subject matter, so students learn the language by using it within specific context rather than learning the language in isolation. This approach is used for children and adults in schools settings or classes for students learning English for specific purposes.
Introduction Literacy – the ability to read and write – is arguably the most important skill necessary for success in school. Literacy skills allow children to become proficient in Language which is used to communicate with people. Learning to read and write occurs on a continuum and incorporates key experiences in listening and speaking, reading and writing. The processes of reading and writing, together with speaking, develop simultaneously and are interdependent and occur in the early stages of literacy development. In order to keep scaffolding with the interactive reading model you have to find what their reading readiness level is and set the correct scope and sequence of skills. Teachers also need to be aware that there has to be progress, and that certain students learn differently.
Reading as one of the English skill is very important in the teaching learning process because reading can help students their understanding through texts. Teaching reading does not only relate to reading the text but also to comprehending the content of the text. In academic context students need to comprehend and deal with all reading aspects and difficulties. Reading comprehension is not just a receptive process, it implies a complex process in which the readers identify basic information and are able to predict, to infer, to argue and to recognize writers‟ points of view. Phonemic awareness includes sounds of a word, the breakdown of words into sounds. A balanced approach to reading is the most effective way to teach students to read as it gives student’s the correct learning opportunities to become engaged and passionate readers. A balanced approach to reading involves the effective use of both phonics and whole language. The elements of the two are combined into a program aimed at educating students to be proficient and lifelong readers.
According to Tierney, R.J. (1990), “Comprehension is a creative, multifaceted thinking process in which students engage with the text” (p. 253). Comprehension is the most important goal of reading. This is the main reason people read, because they want to know the meaning of a story, a meaning of a sentence, or the text that they are reading. Teachers may use multiple strategies for students to comprehend when students are reading. For instance, teachers may activate background knowledge, connect readers with text, determine importance, etc (Harvey, S. & Goudvis, A.
