The path I have taken on my journey to pharmacy has not always been clear, it has been riddled with struggles and failures. I hold these failures very closely as they have become a daily reminder that with enough hard work and dedication, one can proceed with true conviction in their actions and find success. Pharmacy has not always been the ultimate goal of mine, but ever since I was young, I always wanted to do my best to help those who did not have the means of helping themselves. Together with my fascination and respect for the sciences, a once clouded path has become clear. Pharmacy school is the next big step I need to take in the direction that will allow me to accomplish my professional goals. To reiterate, pharmacy was never a lifelong goal of mine from the start, but I knew that helping others would be key to fulfilling my goals. I have pharmaceutical research as a major goal of mine due to my interest in infectious disease, antibiotics, and the growing resistances to antibiotics worldwide, but pharmacy is an intricate network comprised of so many paths and I want to be acquainted with all of them. Ultimately I decided that a career in Pharmacy was perhaps the best way for me to utilize my talents, while at the same time meet my passionate desire to make the world a better place. When you ask people what you think when word “pharmacist” come to your mind? They often say pharmacist have to deal with variety of legal drugs. From my personal opinion, when I hear the word “Pharmacist”, I think of helping others. This inspiration came from my Health Science class I took in twelve grade. Until senior year of my high school, I did not know what I wanted to be. But it all changed, after my first shadowing experience at pharmacist station. By continuing my education at Pharmacy school I can do just that while also learning how to help better people’s lives in a big way. Pharmacy as a profession is the perfect blend of everything I could want in a career. It’s in the healthcare field, it allows me to work with other people and patients, it is a stable career that can be done anywhere in the country, and it is a challenging field that will keep me intellectually stimulated. Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. The importance of the becoming a pharmacist should not be about what the career can give a person in monetary value or the amount of accolades one receives. Instead, the career should be about saving and improving human lives and serving the public. Pharmacists keep people healthy, make them feel better, and try to help the public live longer and happier lives as long as possible. From small infant children to the elderly, everyone needs pharmaceutical care. Sometimes it can be a matter of life and death if medication is not available to the public. Pharmacy as a career would be a wise decision if a person could withstand the amount of education the profession entails.
I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. If a classmate ever tried to argue that majoring in Pharmacy is too difficult, I would be their nemesis. As a college student I witness many students pursuing certain professions because they know their college years will be a breeze. I have never been one of those students. Over the past couple of years I have matured and have become a well-rounded person because of my involvement in school. Being a pre-pharmacy student has taught me how to strive for excellence in my classes and in other day- to-day activities. Spending hours studying chemistry is just one of the experiences that has influenced my decision in wanting to pursue a career as a pharmacist.
Pharmacists have very important roles in healthcare from all angles. Physicians and licensed practitioners that write a written prescription, the pharmacist reviews patient history, health conditions, and interactions with the new medication prescribed. As a pharmacy technician (for six years) I had a somewhat of an overview on what they accomplished in a shift but did not know everything on what I know now from this research. Pharmacy students that are in the process to obtain their doctor of pharmacy (D.Pharm.) go through a series of training, education and internship to become a well-rounded pharmacist.
There, I quickly became immersed in all aspects of pharmacy; from inventory management to medication compliance in addition to serving clients. I distinctly remember one affirming interaction that solidified my drive. A patient 's son came to the pharmacy just after leaving the emergency room. At first, everything seemed to be normal until we realized that the patient did not have any insurance and he would need to pay for the prescription. Knowing the importance of blood pressure medications, and being able to convey that to him; I offered several coverage options to acquire the medications and take care of his mother 's immediate need. Like every career, pharmacists have certain qualities and skills. I feel that I fit many qualities of pharmacists, including an attention to detail, communication skills, and science and mathematic skills. I have also been a perfectionist, paying attention to each detail of my work. This is what helped me stay organized throughout high school, and earn a 4.021 cumulative GPA. Pharmacists must be detail-orientated to ensure their patients receive the right dosage, amount, and type of medication. Next, I have earned strong customer service and communication skills from my job at Fareway Food Stores. Since I earned this job in May 2012, I have made it one of my goals to assist and brighten the day of my customers. As a pharmacist, I would need strong communication skills with my patients to fit them with the best prescription possible. Additionally, I would counsel them on the directions of their mediation, any potential side affects, and how to add new medications into their lifestyle with the least amount of stress.
