Turning on your light, making food in the oven, heating and cooling your house all require energy to work. Most likely you have something in your house powered by nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is reliable, sustainable, safe, and doesn’t affect the earth’s air quality. On the other hand, nuclear energy plants are costly, nuclear waste is detrimental to the environment if not taken care of properly, and again the plants can be dangerous as many people recollect on the major accidents at the Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima. The controversial issue of how safe nuclear energy is, is over speculated by news programs and novice nuclear energy protesters. There have been 33 disastrous power plant accidents that have occurred since 1952, in fact one of the most dreadful accidents recorded happened less than 250 miles away from my home town Warsaw, Virginia (Roger). On March 28, 1979, a power plant located in Middletown, Pennsylvania had experienced a failure in its mechanical system. The main feedwater pumps sending water to the steam generators to cool the reactor core malfunctioned. After this occurred a series of events happened and eventually water was escaping into the main core, when actions were taken, employees made conditions worse. Important pumps and instruments started to shut down eventually leading to the core to overheat and melt. There was a release of radioactive gases that were concerning and threating to the community, it was so radioactive that the governor of Pennsylvania, Richard Thornburgh advised pregnant women and pre-school-age children within a five-mile radius of the plant to leave the area. In cause of one malfunction, radioactive gas was released, public fear skyrocketed, the cost of repair and emergency responders was horrendous, scrutiny against employees and nuclear power plants, and heightened regulations. Those facts show the seriousness of nuclear power plant accidents, and Three Mile Island didn’t even have any resulting deaths like Chernobyl and Fukushima. These power plants
