Every time I take a ferry over to Seattle, I walk across the bridge to 1st Avenue only to pass several people draped in rags, which barely qualify as clothing, who call the streets their home. Despite these conditions, there is always that one person who keeps a positive perspective, in this case the man who tells all the passing people to smile and have a great day. It is inspiring to me to see how someone in such terrible living conditions is able to keep a smile on his face and to spread his joy to others. Contradictory to what people expect of a homeless man to act when he is exposed to such a miserable lifestyle. But in that situation, hope and joy are all you have. Do we live in such a society that citizens of equal rights are forced to live on the sidewalk while others live in a penthouse apartment? I believe that everyone has the right to have a safe place to call home besides for the street. Whether it be a house, an apartment, or even a shelter. Living in my current lifestyle, there are many things I have that others are not as privileged of having. For example a full kitchen of food and appliances. If utilized correctly, you can make a change in the world, which is what I did. My mother and I baked several dozen baked goods to sell to both patients and employees in her office. All the money that we raised was then matched by three other people, which means we have four times the amount of money raised to donate to a needy homeless shelter, the Kitsap Rescue Mission. What we proceeded to do was hand deliver this money down to the shelter in Bremerton. As I walked in, I saw many people who could have been living on the streets. I even saw children. As a child I couldn’t even begin to imagine how I would live without a stable home environment. It amazes me how much work needs to be done in addressing the homeless community throughout the
