Many people may not remember when they were younger and those who do remember may not remember everything. When children were in their first years of life, parents were persuaded into giving their children vaccinations to prevent getting infected by certain dangerous diseases. However, vaccinations rates have been dropping due to some parents being frightened because of the possible negative side effects that can come from a vaccine. One particular vaccine known as the MMR vaccine has caused a great issue because there have been suggestions that this vaccine can cause autism in children. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove that this is true. This should not be a reason to stop vaccinating children from all diseases. Vaccinations are an important part in protecting children’s immune systems from certain infectious diseases. The MMR vaccination was made to protect children and it should be given to children when they are a year old and another dose when they are going to start school. The MMR vaccine is preventative vaccine to a combination of three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. Dr. Andrew Wakefield wrote a medical journal in The Lancet in 1988 claiming that there was a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. This medical was later retracted because it was done incorrectly. In a decision aid made by researchers who specialize in vaccinations and communication sciences, they stated that, “The MMR vaccine does not cause inflammatory bowel disease or autism.” (Leask) There is really no scientific evidence that suggests that autism is caused by the MMR vaccine.
