Random Drug Testing in Schools Essay Did you ever see someone under the influence? Have you ever been tested for alcohol or drugs? Did you ever have close friends consume alcohol or drugs? Drugs and alcohol are not good things. They should not be intertwined into anyone’s lifestyle. Drugs and alcohol can follow you everywhere. Especially in your school. Schools around the world have brought up this one concept: random drug testing to students. There has been repetitive/widespread discussion regarding this topic over the past years. Many people do believe that this concept is a great way to prevent drug use among teenagers, while many do not support the idea. Supporters believe that it will curb drug/alcohol use, make the teenagers resist drugs/alcohol, …show more content…
There have been many theories of negative aspects concerning random drug testing. Adults believe that it is inappropriate to introduce drug testing to teenagers because of privacy issues, mistrust, resistance, and “cheating”. Primarily, privacy has to be considered when doing this because you are invading someone’s personal space. In addition, if a school accuses them of drug/alcohol abuse, they immediately are escorted to be tested. This will probably be done during school time, so learning is being missed. Secondly, students will develop mistrust between the teacher and themselves. They will doubt the teacher’s thoughts and commands, creating a space of distress and distrust. Things will not be able to get done in class. Thirdly, the students will establish resistance among peers and other teachers. The students will oppose, defy, and refuse to listen to the teacher. This also might grow on other students. Teachers will have a hard time managing the students and will also have a hard time controlling their behavior. This is relevant to mistrust. When resistance is made, mistrust will follow. Lastly, one student will find a way to weave his testing scores to be normal. In addition, they will find ways to not take the test. For example, many drug/alcohol abusers will shave their head try not to take the test. Random drug testing includes testing hair. So, if the student has no hair to cut, then they cannot be tested in that area. Also, the student might skip school that day so the drugs/alcohol can leave their system. In conclusion, random drug testing has it’s faults, but when more schools use random drug testing well, the spaces will be
Residents of the town of Longmeadow are very aware that “Longmeadow teens are outperforming teens nationwide” in their consumption of alcohol. Committees have been formed within the community to eliminate the under-aged drinking problem. Many students interviewed at Longmeadow high school say that once they have adapted to a “party lifestyle”, or a lifestyle when one drinks every weekend or more, a breathalyzer is not going to end that habit. A school dance could be a fun place to meet with friends to socialize, hang out and dace, but many people feel that they cannot enjoy themselves as much with out drinking. One LHS student says “ I’d have more fun at a house party drinking that I would at an alcohol-free school function.” This idea may not be morally or legally correct, but it keeps many students from attending school dances. This is where the problem with the breathalyzer begins. Kids who want to drink will go to unsupervised environments rather than to a place where there are adults who could handle a serious situation should one ever occur. It is not legal for kids to drink because they are not capable of dealing with serious situations. The problem of stopping kids from drinking in Longmeadow is much too large for anyone to deal with, but drunken kids should have a safe place to go where they can be watched over.
Drugs and alcohol are a big problem everywhere, but school administrators and teachers want to make sure that students are able to reach their full potential and drug use would greatly hinder that. However, according to the 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey 39.9% of students have tried marijuana and 70.8% of students have drank alcohol (YRBSS 2011 National Overview). If schools were to expel every student because of drug or alcohol use, there would hardly be any students left. A booklet published by the Drug Policy Alliance has research that shows that zero tolerance policies do not deter drug and alcohol use. Drug and alcohol use continues to rise in schools, and many schools do not do anything to help combat it except for harsh disciplinary procedures. Most elementary schools have drug education programs, but the same type of education does not work well with teenagers. The Drug Policy Alliance advocates for a three step process to help students instead of p...
...verall, this could result in the behavior worsening, or a lack of trust and a break of teacher-student bond, which to me is an essential part of making an impact in a student’s lifestyle decision.
...ng drugs will have a huge impact on them and the people that they are around. When a person does drugs once, they will keep using them and eventually become addicted. Recently drug addiction in the United States is at an all-time high, especially among teens. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University found that teens who abuse prescription drugs are twice as likely to use alcohol, five times more likely to use marijuana, and twelve to twenty times more likely to use illegal street drugs such as heroin, ecstasy and cocaine than teens who do not abuse prescription drugs. Forty five percent of drug overdose deaths, in teens are attributed to the abuse of prescription drugs. The illegal abuse of prescription drugs starts at home in a teen’s own bathroom. Most teens get the prescription drugs from their own medicine cabinet or their unknowing parents. With such alarming facts
“A medical dictionary defines a drug as ‘any substance that when taken into the living organism may modify one or more of its functions’” (Newton 12). However, when speaking of drug testing for abuse a person is usually thinking about illegal drugs or drugs that can alter athletic performance in sporting events. Mandatory drug testing was not allowed in public schools until June 2002 when the Supreme Court allowed for public schools to do random drug testing (Carroll 23). This decision allowed for drug testing in all schools throughout the United States not just for athletes but also students who are in any activities within the school, for example clubs and competitive events (Carroll 23). Even though drug testing is now allowed by the Supreme Court many schools do not yet have mandatory drug test policies. Mandatory drug testing for high school athletes should be required because it decreases drug use in schools, is relatively inexpensive, and can prevent drug use and or abuse that can lead to a lifelong addiction.

How Urine drug test help: According to studies, when a man takes in drugs, as with some different substances, for instance, support, drugs, or refreshments, it mixes with our blood, and as we all know, the blood manages all parts of our body, including the head. In America, marijuana is the most used drug after alcohol and tobacco. Marijuana is used by millions of Americans, despite the harsh laws illegalizing the drug. Some states, such as Washington and Colorado have legalized marijuana for recreational use. Efforts to legalize the drug in other states have been unsuccessful such as Proposition 19 in California, which failed in 2010 despite uptight campaigns. Billions of dollars are spent at the state, local, and federal level to fight the use of marijuana. Millions are arrested for marijuana offenses and sentenced for extended periods. Marijuana has negative effects on the human health and high potential for addiction. Legalizing marijuana will eliminate the black market, which is responsible for the increase in violence, crime, and corruption. Resources used for mass incarceration in the war on drug can be redirected to rehabilitation to decrease drug abuse and addiction.

Many high schools across the country have brought much attention to the idea of giving random drug tests to students in high school. The newfound interest in student drug testing may be as a result of recent polls, which have shown an increase in drug use among high school students. Many teachers, parents, and members of school comities are for the drug testing, while most students and some parents feel that this would be a violation of students rights as Americans, which is true.
