Should There be a Law for Texting and Driving
Texting and driving is the latest buzz. Everyone knows it’s dangerous to text and drive. Statistics show that distracted driving specifically while using a handheld device significantly increases the amount of automobile accidents. Is the solution to this problem to create another law to be ignored and potentially even further the amount of accidents or should we put our focus on enforcing existing laws?
“Legal Change as of 2015: In May 2015, Oklahoma became the 46th state to ban texting while driving. The law, which goes into effect on November 1, 2015, prohibits texting while operating a motor vehicle and includes a $100 fine for offenders.
Prior to November 1, 2015, although Oklahoma did not specifically prohibit cell phone use or texting while driving, there is a statewide prohibition against distracted driving.” (NOLO).
Across the country news papers from local news stories to national media are a buzz with broadcasts about the rise in texting while driving accidents. To completely meet this requirement the law could be that all traffic is limited to 1 mile per hour. This would completely eliminate the need for further laws, as at that speed there would not be an occasion for property damage or loss of life although 1 mph is hardly considered transportation. With increased speed the usefulness of transportation increases but it brings with it the additional risk of harm.
