In the United State, besides Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana, it is illegal to operate a betting scheme. Sports betting is commonly performed through a bookmaker or rather known as a bookie, through various types of internet outlets. The FBI estimated that 2.5 billion dollars were gambled during the NCAA tournament, with only 80 million dollars bet legally through sportsbooks in Nevada, which left 2.4 billion dollars illegally waged. Games can be given away with officials, coaches, and even with the professional athletes. The people involved with team begin to bet on the games, and favor teams when they have control of the games. For example Tim Donaghy, an NBA official pleaded guilty to gambling charges. Donaghy would bet on games that he officiated. Donaghy would also provide gamblers with referee information, and player injury reports. Donaghy’s experience is a perfect example on how officials fravor other teams or give away the games. When officials bet they can give more fouls on a certain team which causes the teams to have advantages. Athletes can also be part of this too, for example if the player has money on the opposing team they wouldn't put in as much effort in the game, because they have money on the line. Players can also injure other players intentionally just to get one out out the game or to do whatever they can to win their bets. The end results of this treatment of favorite players would be more points per games, greater stats, winning more games, winning championships and more endorsements with greater financial gain. Gambling is a controversial topic that causes many arguments for and against making a wager for any reason. The lottery has been a welcomed form of gambling in Texas since 1992, it is one of the biggest legalized forms of gambling in Texas. Although many citizens question, should all forms of gambling be legalized as a means to support public education? It should not be legalized because, expanding gambling to generate funds for education could negatively impact the social welfare of individuals and families. Also legalizing all forms of gambling could increase gambling addiction, and exploit the economically disadvantaged.

The focus of professional sports has evolved from one of teamwork and camaraderie to one of avarice and greed. The specific problems in recent years that have stemmed off this overwhelming greed include exorbitant salaries, lockouts (or work stoppages) in professional sports, and the growing disparity among team payrolls. Most recognize these issues as major problems; however, others overlook the greed and see validity in the financial aspect of today's sports world. Since the early 1900’s when college football first became a NCAA sport, it has had a history of paying its athletes as well as improper benefits. In around 1910, Walter camp was put under fire for having a fund for players of over $100,000. Camp was one of the early pioneers in football that brought the game where it is today. In the 1950’s, scandals hit the college of William and Mary for hiding its players poor grades to allow them to be eligible all season. (Branch 83) This is important because the University of William and Mary was contending with powerhouse football programs that season for a national title. This here all shows that even 50-100 years ago collegiate athletics had already been dealing with improper benefits for players.
Collegiate athletics in the United States, in particular N.C.A.A. (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I basketball and football, have become one of the most prominent forms of sports entertainment today. Like their professional counterparts, the economic stability of many university and college sports programs relies on the success of its teams. As a result, coaches and team officials have been subject to a great deal of criticism, as many have been using improper methods to recruit athletes for their teams. In the past half century, the NCAA, an amateur organization, has been no stranger to its share of corruption and scandal. The NCAA’s constitution states that “An amateur sportsman is one who engages in sports for the physical, mental or social benefits he derives therefrom, and to whom the sport is an avocation. According to the NCAA regulations an athlete will lose his/her eligibility if they are paid to play; sign a contract with an agent; receive a salary, incentive payment, award, gratuity educational expenses or allowances; or play on a professional team. The word amateur in sports has stood for positive values compared to professional, which has had just the opposite. The professional sport has meant bad and degrading; while the amateur sport has meant good and elevating. They arrive at the camp and make their way inside. All kinds of diverse reporters and television hosts swarmed Terrell. Danny was feeling as if he does not belong there. He walked into the building and sat on the bleachers. The whole place was teeming with college coaches. Danny could not wait to start the camp games. There are many different issues dealing with the legalization of online gambling. The current law dealing with online gambling is the Wire Transfer Act of 1961. Under this statute, the law is violated when telephone lines are used in interstate or foreign commerce to place wagers. The statute also bars the transmission of information that assists betters to gamble on sports events and contests. Recently, Congress have been active in seeking to pass further legislation to restrict betting on the web. Last November, the Senate proposed the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act. This statute would make it a crime to knowingly use the internet or other interactive computer services to place, receive, or otherwise make a bet or wager; or send, receive, or invite information assisting in the placing of a bet or wager. Penalties would be as high as $20,000 and 4 years in prison. However, in a vote in July, the bill narrowly missed obtaining the two thirds majority required to pass the bill. In May, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act was introduced. This statute would criminalize and prohibit any person engaged in a gambling business from knowingly accepting from another person who is involved in internet gambling a credit card or extension of credits, an electronic transfer of funds, or any instrument payable through a financial institution. This would shield certain financial institutions from liability as long as they do not know that their facilities are being used for online gambling. This bill has also not yet been passed.
