What's the spread? What's the overunder? Do you have a parlay? Did you take them moneyline? all these types of questions are sports betting questions, this means people are betting on games. In the United State, besides Nevada, Oregon, Delaware, and Montana, it is illegal to operate a betting scheme. Sports betting is commonly performed through a bookmaker or rather known as a bookie, through various types of internet outlets. The FBI estimated that 2.5 billion dollars were gambled during the NCAA tournament, with only 80 million dollars bet legally through sportsbooks in Nevada, which left 2.4 billion dollars illegally waged. Games can be given away with officials, coaches, and even with the professional athletes. The people involved with team begin to bet on the games, and favor teams when they have control of the games. For example Tim Donaghy, an NBA official pleaded guilty to gambling charges. Donaghy would bet on games that he officiated. Donaghy would also provide gamblers with referee information, and player injury reports. Donaghy’s experience is a perfect example on how officials fravor other teams or give away the games. When officials bet they can give more fouls on a certain team which causes the teams to have advantages. Athletes can also be part of this too, for example if the player has money on the opposing team they wouldn't put in as much effort in the game, because they have money on the line. Players can also injure other players intentionally just to get one out out the game or to do whatever they can to win their bets.
