You wake up in the hospital, look around, and find a doctor hovering nearby declaring that you have just suffered through a heart attack; affirming that if not for your dog, you would have died. You remember back to earlier that day: sitting on the couch, feeling a little off, hearing your dog barking, sensing him nudging you, going to the phone to call the ambulance, and having your dog by your side until you were safe inside the aluminum walls of the emergency vehicle. Although it sounds abnormal that a dog would be the one to save someone’s life, situations similar to the one above are not uncommon. Our current society is a busy one; busy enough that having the time to exercise is a difficult task for many. However, animals, especially dogs, can function as personal trainers: motivating you to go for a walk or run due to their crucial need to release energy. A dog owner who is “responsible for walking their pups… [is] less likely to be obese than dog owners who pass the duty off to someone else or those who don 't own dogs at all” (McCandless). With the inspiration from their pets, even the busiest person will be able to gain their recommended thirty minutes of exercise a day in order to stay healthy. A furry friend may carry thousands of bacteria and allergens, but the exposure of infants to these microbes “can actually influence children’s immune development while reducing the probability of certain allergic diseases” (Borreli). Adults also benefit from contact with the allergens carried on household animals through the reduction of the effects of pet allergies that comes with exposure. Although an individual may not have certain life-threatening diseases at the present time, owning a pet will help increase exercise and boost the immune system in order to prevent future health

Animal companions have long enriched our lives, and for some, have become an integral part of the family. According to the 2017-2018 APPA National Pet Owners Survey, there has been a consistent increase in pet ownership over the last couple of decades, such that 68%, or 84.6 million, U.S. households own a pet; 48% of which own dogs and 38% own feline companions. Research suggests that owning a pet or being treated with animal-assisted therapy (AAT) may provide social and physical benefits to humans. For this literature review, we will explore the major findings of AAT and pet-related research over the last several decades with an emphasis on the physiological effects and social support benefits of owning canine companions.
Animal cruelty is an issue that gets plenty of attention in the U.S. From all the commercials to the donation hotlines and tee shirts everyone in the states knows that it is a relevant issue, but what about testing on animals? It’s not as relevant or discussed as other forms of cruelty, but the truth is we kill thousands of innocent animals all for the hope that maybe a wrinkle or two may disappear. This is horribly insensitive and cruel and I really can’t believe that we could do this to such innocent and loving creatures. We have to accept that animals are not ours. Cosmetic testing on animals is not only cruel but illegal in several countries; innocent animals are constantly losing their lives for our vanity.
When thoughts about the circus come into play, animals and their awesome acts come to the brain, but do people really know what’s going on behind-the-scenes. Animals shouldn’t be used in the circus because they are abused while training, get torn away from mothers right after birth, which causes long-term disabilities, and are left in their cages for hours on end. If you really think about it there are other animals out there that seem to be a much better choice for humans to utilize as hunter companions. Take the chimpanzee for instance it has hands and pose able thumbs. Seems like a chimp would make a great companion we could even teach it to use tools to aid itself in the adventures we send it on. In today’s society, 13 there are many pets that are out there looking for a place to eat and a roof that is over their head. There is many people who could be that one person to give that pet what it needs. ASPCA is a place where they shelter many animals that are in need of a place to stay. Most of the animals that stay are there because of people who cannot look after their pets. The animals are left on the street left to defend themselves or when a pet has a litter and the owner does not have the money to afford the animals. The Madison area needs its own ASPCA due to the increase of the pet population and to offer adoption services.
