“It is easy when you are young; to believe that what you desire is no less than what you deserve, to assume that if you want something badly, it is your God-given right to have it”(?). Risk taking--Thrilling, empowering, electrifying-- Plays a role in the lives of everyone. The appeal of risk comes in varying degrees of strength: low, where a person thinks about the risk but never goes through with it, medium, high, and of course extreme, where the person is so set on taking that risk that they seem to have blinders on, distracting them from the fact that they are even taking a risk at all. Christopher Mccandless, Simon Yates, and Joe Simpson, fall into the upper end of the scale. By examining the risks they took, it is impossible to pinpoint a single cause of these risks; however, a hubris and driven attitude can be tied in with any other possible risk taking factor in order to determine the reason behind …show more content…
Take Chris Mccandless for example. He never had a great relationship with his father, “Both father and son were stubborn and high strung. Given Walts need to exert control and Chris’s extravagantly independent nature, polarization was inevitable... eventually chris rebelled - and when he finally did, it was with characteristic immoderation.” (?). This illustrates that Chris was very strong willed and determined; nonetheless, Chris was pushed by his father so much that personality traits were developed by force, and they most likely would not of been there in the first place. Mccandless’s risky behavior can also be look at from a broader spectrum, “It is hardly unusual for a young man to be drawn to a pursuit considered reckless by his elders: engaging in risky behavior is a rite of passage in our culture no less than most others...McCandless in his fashion, merely took risk-taking to its logical extreme.” (pg ?) This displays the fact that risky behavior amongst a majority of people can be caused by external factors, but it also shows that Chris was not just
Taking a risk is something very few people are willing to do. If you think about it all the greats had to take a risk before they succeed in anything. In The Odyssey, Odysseus takes a huge risk fighting in wars, trying to get back to his beloved Penelope. Much like Vincent Willem van Gogh , A painter, who took huge risks living off of his art, but now he is One of the greatest painters of all times. They both risked their lives to succeed in something great.Van Gogh could have gone broke and starved to death Odysseus could have died at sea or in war. People take risks every time they get up and present a paper or show people there art work. You could mess up, but you also could succeed. This quote from book twelve, “ But as I sent them on toward
When it comes to taking risks people tend to view them as unwise, complicated and far out of their comfort zone. As a result, they become frightened and obtain the mistaken belief that they are incapable of taking on new opportunities, which can possibly set them up for success. Such beliefs are what cause people to make poor choices, and thus disable them to live a life worth living. Dr. Seuss, “Oh, the Places you’ll go” was intended to express the various amounts of great places life has to offer, but it is all up to the reader where they decide to go, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. (…). And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”(Places). Every single person has control over what they want to be in l...
Trigger warnings? Some may say necessary while others think of it as people being weak. Imagine sitting in a class and the topic at hand is the war. The professor without giving any warning decides to show a video of the gruesome war. Little did they know in their class sits a student who has just returned from the war and wanted to push their life forward. By not giving this warning, the student freaked out and caused a whole disruption. They managed to calm him down and tired to continue the lesson. Now would you be comfortable to continue the lesson after a huge disruption, or do you think that even a little warning in the beginning of class could have prevented this? Trigger warnings help even in the smallest ways. Trigger warnings are
Everyone is supposed to go to college. Very few people find it personally and occupationally fulfilling to flip burgers for a living, so many opt for higher education. You get to leave the nest, meet new people, and have new experiences. The fallout from these experiences is exactly what this paper is going to talk about. Not everyone’s background is the same and some people are just dealt a bad hand, emotionally and psychologically. For these people, seeing and hearing things that most people would look at as being unpleasant, and coming from the minds of dead people that lived thousands of years, can bring trauma and embarrassment when mixed with the right circumstances. At Colombia University in New York, situations like these are being addressed by a call for “Trigger Warnings.” Trigger warnings, according to Dictionary.com are “a stated warning that the content of a text, video, etc., may upset or offend some people, especially those who have previously experienced a related trauma.” These kinds of warning have proponents and opponents on both sides
Benjamin Franklin once stated “Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”
Have you ever wondered how some athletes have gotten so good at a certain sport? Have you ever thought about what they did in order for them to get this good? For some the answer is simple; workout and train. But for others the answer is different; the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. There are some people that argue that steroids should be legalized and allowed in professional sports. Other people argue that steroids should not be allowed. Today I am going to state my opinion and justify my reason. Steroids should not be allowed in professional sports because it can be very dangerous to the athlete’s health, it is a way to gain and un-fair advantage and it can be dangerous in both social and physical aspects.
Yes, this country was founded on liberty and freedom of choice, there can be no denying this. The primary source of debate against vaccinations as an assault on liberty stems from parent’s opinion that this is in some way the government trying to tell them how to raise their children as children in many states must have current vaccinations to attend public school. With respect, the government can have authority as to how someone raises their children. The government has laws detailing what constitutes child endangerment and abuse and failure for parents to remain well outside of these lines can result in parental incarceration and the movement of children into the foster care system. Federal law defines child abuse as "any recent act or failure
Teenagers are getting back on the roads and behind the wheel meaning the is a higher risk of accidents. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in 15-to 20-year olds. Automakers are creating ways to make their automobiles safer in order to reduce these deaths. Teenage drivers are inexperienced and need the extra protection to keep them safe if an incident was to occur. Automobile safety features are necessary for the teenage driver to stay protected and alert.
Since the dawn of humanity, exercise has been crucial for physical survival. In recent times, however, exercise is losing its significance to human survival. Some would argue that it already has lost its significance, and as exercise becomes less important, people exercise less. According to fitness.gov, only 33% of adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week (citation). Clearly there is a problem. However, there is still a fraction of the population that exercises diligently. Why do these people stick with it? Exercise has countless advantages that are still extremely important to our lives. So even though the need of exercise may appear to be diminishing, the practical effects should be enough to encourage people
Overcoming adversity is imperative. In fact, you can 't have the happiness and success you want unless you have adversity in your life and overcome it. It is essential for progressing into who you want to be. It shows you what you are made of. It teaches you more about yourself, how to approach what you want, and how to maintain the success that you have. Without it, you wouldn 't know how far you could go or how capable you are because you wouldn 't have anything to push you or compare to.
There is a massive amount of car accidents that occur every day, that consequently become fatal. In many cases, the driver and the passengers do not have on a seat belt to prevent them from being thrown out of the car or colliding with another car, causing them to be thrown against the dashboard or some other tragic accident. Some people may think, “Wearing a seatbelt isn’t cool”, “I’m only going down the street” or sometimes just irresponsibly forget to put on their seatbelt when they are inside of a vehicle. You may think that wearing a seatbelt is not trendy and you are only making a quick trip going down the street to the corner store, however, you cannot control others actions on the road anything can happen in the blink of an eye.
Not every event has a guaranteed outcome- sometimes, one has to take a gamble in the game of life. There are some, however, who would prefer to travel within the safe, confined lane of actions with a definite outcome. Deciding whether or not to take risks in life can be tricky, but as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment.” This quote means that people should take risks in their endeavors, because life is precisely about trying new things and experiences. As the quote explains, taking risks in life is a vital step to success, fulfillment, and gaining more out of experiences.
Many don’t realize that the road to success isn’t so much a road as it is a winding,

Risk taking is considered an everyday staple of life and a major part of growing up. When we limit the risks we take in our lives we also limit the capabilities those risks present, such as encountering new experiences and situations that improve us as human beings. Risk taking is imperative to personal growth and when discussed in good context it seems harmless, however that is only a half truth. To say risk taking is always safe is completely incorrect and sometimes these risks are often unsafe and not thought out. This essay addresses the following question, why do teenagers engage in this form of unhealthy risk taking? I will also be discussing whether or not certain groups are more at risk and any known strategies to make teenagers aware
