I feel the dog restrictions in Shullsburg are limiting the lifestyles for both specific dog breeds as well as their owners. When I say I have a pit bull does that frighten you? For most people it does, even though it shouldn’t. Did you know that pit bull isn’t just one breed of a dog? There are seven different dog breeds that are classified as pits. My puppy, a terrier, lab, retriever, and pit bull mix, is both loving and affectionate, but because she is part pit bull people already have a bad image plastered in their head without even meeting her. When uneducated people say bad things about pit bulls, it devastates me. I don’t think it is fair to conclude all pit bulls are “vicious” based on the actions of one. I believe towns should punish the deed not the breed. For example, my dog’s previous home had to surrender her because one of their neighbors calling the local city office and complaining that they thought she “looked” like she may hurt one of their children. If she was a teddy bear dog, there wouldn’t have been an issue. Second, not all dogs are raised by the same owners; therefore, they have different attitudes and personalities. Some pits are not as fortunate as others to have nice homes and owners; however, this is true with other breeds of dogs as well. Always having to wear a muzzle will frustrate the dog, and it will make the dog look more intimidating. How would you feel if you were walking down the street and you saw a dog walking towards you with a muzzle on? I would feel frightened and the truth is you would probably feel the same, because seeing a muzzle makes me think the dog is aggressive. This is not true in all cases. Having the dog wear a muzzle will make the dog feel trapped; therefore, the dog may act up. It is understandable to muzzle a dog if it has a previous biting history. What I can’t comprehend is why I have to muzzle my dog because of it’s breed. We have trained our dog to be comfortable in the muzzle. Is it fair? No, but it again shows how laid back and obedient she actually is. I believe when people judge a dog by it’s breed, it is similar to the segregation between black and whites. During the time of segregation people didn’t get judged by their personality, they were judged by their looks (skin color), just like pit
