Considering all that Japan has been through, people still find love for the person that everyone hates, and they will do anything to stay alive. America and Japan have gone through alot over the years, from allies to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. Then right back to becoming allies again. Japanese war bride Hiroko Tolbert married her husband to get away from all the dangers. So my question is, why fall in love with the enemy? At the time Hiriko wasn’t thinking about what was going on between Japan and America all she knew was that if she married this man that she would be free.
War brides is a term that is used when a man that is in the army marries a foreign women. War brides came from over 50 countries. Between 1944 and 1950 over 150,00 European women married American servicemen and over 50,000 married in the far east. The first marriage happened in 1942 in Great Britain and Australia, and it ended in 1952 with Japanese war brides. Throughout the war around 65,000 women married American soldiers and sailors there was a total of 758 Japanese war brides that made it in the U.S. with the help of the Red Cross. After World War 2, America didn’t allow many immigrants to pass through. At this time there was an act created called the war brides act, this allowed military personnel to bring in their foreign spouse and children.

Even though they were able to get in America with their spouse, it doesn’t change the way how people feel about other and especially the situation with Japan. Magnifying the already existing dilemma of discrimination, the bombing of Pearl Harbor introduced Japanese-Americans to the harsh and unjust treatment they were forced to confront for a lifetime to come. Wakatsuki Ko, after thirty-five years of residence in the United States, was still prevented by law from becoming an American citizen.
Japan’s defeat was seen as a relief to some Japanese citizens and hard to swallow by others. Some individuals were even willing to kill their entire family and commit suicide after learning of Japan’s defeat . Japanese citizens, especially in Manchuria, faced hostility from Russians, Korean, and Americans who came and occupied parts of Japan . The defeat of Japan brought with it humiliation the country had not been prepared for. After World War II, the Imperial government had ended which made way for a new, peaceful era in Japan .
During the 1900’s, it was common for people to immigrate to America. They saw it as a land of freedom and opportunity. Some thought that this was a great way for the US’ economy to boom, but some thought otherwise. With the shortage of jobs, many believed that the immigrants were stealing their precious jobs. Japanese were treated unjustly which inevitably affected Hana and Taro very quickly. “The President of the United States authorized the Secretary of War and his military commanders to prescribe areas which any or all persons could be excluded...'It means we are all going to be evacuated one day soon,' Taro explained sadly, 'It means we are all going to be uprooted from our homes and interned without a trial or a hearing," (p. 154 Uchida). When Japan bombed the U.S., it really opened Hana’s eyes to how cruel the world can be, especially since it was her homeland. What this event also did was flip the definition of America to Hana and Taro. They always thought of America as a safe place to be themselves and a fresh new start to form their lives but now they were taking away the Japanese-American rights one by one. While in the Japanese concentration camps, tragedy struck Hana when she didn’t think life could get any worse. "'There was an accident, Mrs.Takeda,' the director said, ' your husband was shot by one of the guards. He was walking near the barbed wire fence and the soldier thought he was trying to escape," (p.211 Uchida). Hana was furious at the unreasonable and awful death of her husband but rethought her relationship with Taro. She forgot all the little things that bothered her and focused on their

However, as a part of the immigrant experience, emphasized throughout Uchida’s Picture Bride, immigrants faced numerous problems and hardships, including a sense of disillusionment and disappointment, facing racial discrimination not only by white men, but even the United States government. Immigrants were plagued with economic hardships, and were forced to survive day by day in terrible living conditions. After the tragedy at Pearl Harbor, the government further stripped Japanese American’s rights, as seen in internment camps. Japanese immigrants had to quickly realize that they had to tolerate these conditions and put their fantasies and illusions aside in order to build a new life for themselves and future generations.
Much controversy has been sparked due to the internment of the Japanese people. Many ask whether it was justified to internment them. It is a very delicate issue that has two sides, those who are against the internment of the Japanese-Americans and those who are for it. With World War II raging in the East, America was still, for the most part, very inactive in the war. When America took a stand against Japan by not shipping them supplies, Japan became very upset. Japan, being a big island that is very overpopulated with little natural resources, depended on America to provide them with an assortment of supplies including scrap metal and oil, vital items that are needed in a time of war. Japan retaliated by declaring war on America and attacking Pearl Harbor. This surprise act led to many soldiers deaths and millions of dollars of damaged army equipment, including air craft carriers and planes. As a result to Japan declaring war, the Japanese-Americans were asked to and eventually forced to do their duty to the country and report to internment camps until the war conflict was over. Many opposed this act for a couple of reasons. One reason was that people felt that it was a huge hypocrisy that the Japanese were being interned while the Italians and Germans, also our enemies, were still walking around free in America. Another reason why many were against the internment was because many of the Japanese had already been in America for some time now. The Issei, the first generation of Japanese people that immigrated from Japan, had immigrated many years ago. A whole another generation of Japanese children had already began growing up in America called the Nissei. They were automatically U.S. citizens for they were born in America and for the most part were like other American children. Anti-Internment activists also said that the Japanese were being robbed of their rights as U.S. citizens. However, there are two sides to everything.
After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the United States was filled with panic. Along the Pacific coast of the U.S., where residents feared more Japanese attacks on their cities, homes, and businesses, this feeling was especially great. During the time preceding World War II, there were approximately 112,000 persons of Japanese descent living in California, Arizona, and coastal Oregon and Washington. These immigrants traveled to American hoping to be free, acquire jobs, and for some a chance to start a new life. Some immigrants worked in mines, others helped to develop the United States Railroad, many were fishermen, farmers, and some agricultural laborers.
After the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by Imperial Japan, military and political leaders in the United States began to suspect a full scale attack on the West Coast. This was due to the fact that Japan had lead a massive campaign through parts of Asia and the Pacific from 1936 to 1942. At first American opinions favored Japanese immigrants and their children believing that their loyalties to the U.S. would never falter. However, six weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor many Americans became concerned about the loyalties of people who were ethnically Japanese.
My name is Makino Toshio and I am a second generation Japanese-American. My father moved to Hawaii before coming to the mainland, like most Japanese-Americans. Before World War II, I worked on a Japanese truck farm. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, tension was bad for any Japanese-American in the United States. Many people in the United States did not trust people with Japanese ancestry. A store that I usually shop at had a sign in the window saying, “We don’t want any Japs back here-EVER! Within hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor at Hawaii, FBI agents went house to house and rounded up 1,212 Japanese in the U.S. mainland and Hawaii islands. Most of the arrests were prominent leaders in Japanese communities. All of them were taken to unknown destinations and treated as Prisoners of War.
What if entire families were suddenly evicted and thrown into prison just because of their ethnicity? What if thousands of people suddenly disappeared without a trace?

And in the late 1800s, the immigrants’ situation changed. Many Americans started to look at the immigrants, as if they were different.
During World War II many U.S soldiers and service-men left America and went off to other countries to fight in the war. Many of these soldiers ended up falling in love with women in these foreign countries. The soldiers would then marry these women and have their new wives move to America with them. When married to a soldier, the War Bride had to sacrifice and leave many things behind. The U.S. military is a strong force and body that protects and serves the American people. Many people support the military and some even disagree with it. What people forget is that without a military the U.S. would be totally over run by foreign countries claiming ground. The military also helps with the nation’s economy boosting the balance of money in the works. Families have trouble with members who serve since there is always chance that they never return but it is because of their service that we are still a free country. Even though the military causes pain to families when a loved one is lost, the U.S. needs a military because with a military the economy increases and that without a military we would be invaded by a dictator or foreign
Intro: The people, language, and culture is all different it’s nothing like home that’s how the Japanese probably felt when first arriving at the United States. Arriving to a new country only hope for a better for a life they also probably felt odd or even baffled on how strange this new land must have been. To make matters worse they were treated with discrimination and feared by many and the executive order 9066 made matters worse.
