According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 32 million adults and 15 million children. For over 35 years, Feeding America continues to be in the forefront in solving this crisis by providing food to people in need through a nationwide network of food banks. In the late 1960s, Van Hengel established the nation’s first food bank and years later established the first national organization of food banks, Second Harvest. Second Harvest was later called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network and in 2008, the national organization changed its name to Feeding America.
I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. A variety of benefits are available for all Americans and some non-citizens who are in need of aid. Many Americans are aware that these programs exist, but may not be informed about how many people receive assistance, what kind of benefits are available, or who garners government relief (Welfare Info.).
45 million Americans with low income rely on at least one of the many welfare programs. Of these government assistance programs, many of them deal with fraud and abuse. “Some cases of government assistance misuse are more blatant than others, but some aid recipients are using sneaky tactics that give other needy Americans a bad reputation” (calonia 1). Clearly, people are abusing the system in order to receive money they do not deserve. This makes it harder for people who need the welfare programs to get the money they need to support a family.

Do you remember your favorite “School Lunch”? I do, I essentially had two favorites; pizza and hamburgers with fries. Think back, wasn’t there at least one school lunch that the lunch ladies made that everyone was so excited to eat. There are two types of people in Canada those who are economically stable and those who are not. The gap has become so broad that society could never reach an equal balance. Due to some Canadians not being employed, financially stable or educated it leads to them developing a lifestyle that could be a harmful to their health, this reason allowed food banks to take place helping those Canadians that are in need by donating food and volunteering to make a difference. The goodhearted people who started them thought food banks would be a short-term response. Now they 're a normal feature of our landscape (Power, 2011). This shows that even though Food Banks were initially a short-term response towards hungry, due to the gap that is placed between the rich and the poor it has become difficult reducing the gap. As the rich are getting richer and the poor are still struggling to shorten the gap, the food banks provide support to the poor by giving them food to eat and give them a healthy diet so they can decrease the risk of harming their health. You know I never thought of grocery shopping as being a challenge or a skill until I had a house of my own and a family to care for. Today's grocery shopping trips in the Lambert household include my three children ages seven, four, and two tagging along. Wanting anything and everything. I use to enjoy grocery shopping and now it takes so much planning, memorization, and legit skill to get in and out within my set budget, and with getting everything on my list. After doing this for about seven to eight years with children I would consider myself a pro at grocery shopping!
In anticipation of the Thanksgiving Holiday, we all are salivating over the turkey and all the fixings we plan to stuff ourselves with while celebrating with family and friends. We all take for granted the roof over our heads and a refrigerator stacked with food. Whenever we get hungry we just go to the refrigerator and eat to our heart 's content. While we are overindulging ourselves, many within our community are homeless and hungry, not knowing where their next meal will come from or if they will find shelter. Besides adults, there are hundreds of children who are starving, not getting the proper nourishment they need for healthy physical growth and mental development.
