What we feed our dogs is one of the most important choices dog owners can make and choosing the right diet for your dog isn't always easy. Dogs look to their owners for all of their feeding requirements and it is important you choose a food that is well balanced, containing all the vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins they need to build and maintain healthy cells. Starting from the beginning, puppies have different requirements than adult dogs and senior dogs also need altered diets. It is important to remember that dogs stomachs are sensitive and a sudden change in diet can cause vomiting and diarrhoea so you should try to keep your dog on one type of food and if changes are needed than by gradually adding the new food to the old food, adding …show more content…

With small breed dogs it may be beneficial to find a food with smaller bits of kibble to prevent choking. It is a good idea to choose the type of food you want to feed your dog when they are a puppy as changing food types in an adult dog can prove challenging.
Most vets will recommend feeding a complete dry food (this can be moistened when very young) as this type of food is often the most nutritionally balanced, is better for their teeth and is easier to prevent overfeeding. However there are also wet foods which can be mixed with dry foods and also raw feeding which can be very difficult to feed a balanced meal without lots of research but there are companies that make ready raw meals which are balanced. Puppies meals should be spread out between 3 to 4 small meals throughout the day to prevent them getting hungry and helps with the energy uptake.
Adult dogs dont need as much energy in their food and will need a complete food aimed at adult dogs. You may want to think about how much energy your dog needs as working dogs and dogs that get lots of exercise may need a food designed for working dogs which is again higher
