Being loyal has given me the fundamental human skills, such as responsibility, consideration and decency. As a student at Detroit Mercy, following Jesuit ideals has allowed me to practice these values to integrate them into a permanent way of life. Values must be structured, consistent and practiced to be legitimate. Staying loyal to your values helps build and maintain your character, which, at the end of the day, is all we have. I understand the positive effects loyalty creates as I now embrace Ignatian values in order to pursue high-reaching goals in life. ReBUILDetroit is a NIH funded program to offer underrepresented minority students an academic opportunity to conduct biomedical research in their field of interest with intentions to encourage BUILD scholars to pursue a PhD. The scientific research I conduct is for the purpose of educating people, with the hope of turning health care into a more positive experience for everyone. As a scientist, all my values begin with loyalty and service. My love for people is what motivates me to look ahead to my ultimate goal, a doctoral degree, so I can take bigger action to share my success with the world. Since last year, I have devoted my Friday mornings to delivering fresh fruits and produce to nearby neighborhoods that experience food insecurity. Service allows my mind to grow by learning new experiences and insights regarding those who are underprivileged and are in need of assistance. These individuals are people who lack social support and resources to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I also volunteer at Angel’s Place, a home for elderly individuals with mental and developmental disabilities, for over a year now. As a Relationship Resident Volunteer, I listen and manage difficult or emotional situations and try to help individuals resolve situations appropriately, such as advocating and providing the needs for physically impaired people. Lastly, I am president of the Chi Eta Phi Sorority at Detroit Mercy. Chi Eta Phi is a professional nursing sorority organization that was primarily created to serve people. We are internationally recognized leaders who develop healthy communities through advocacy, collaboration, education, leadership, research, and service. On Sundays, I visit local churches, educating people about hypertension and diabetes. I help each individual take their blood pressure and blood sugar and teach them how to adjust to a healthier
