Why Risk The Odds

It was November 14th and my ambitions were running at an all time high. It was the first time since I had came to college that I had a decent amount of money saved up. Being that I had a nice thick wallet burning a hole in my pocket, it seemed as if there would be no better way to spend it than going to the casino. Upon entering the casino, I was overwhelmed with the bright flashing lights, the cards being dealt, and the potential chance of winning big. With there being no mirrors to ruin how cool I thought I looked, no clocks to remind myself how long I have been there, crazy intricate carpet to make me look up, boring ceilings to make me look down, and all of the exciting machines. It would limit how much time you spend there and make you hopefully want to leave sooner than later. For those who chose to stay later because they claim they are just playing for fun, or they have enough money to spend some at the casino, it may seem like it isn’t a big deal, but those claims are for most, the start to the problem. If someone who is “just playing for fun” ends up winning a lot, than that’s when they think they will all of the time and continue to come back. The numbers talk in this situation when the facts of overall winning odds are between a 30-48 percent chance. For the upper class who go to the casino because they have enough extra money to spend a little bit at the casino every now and then, often times their claim goes far wrong. There are hundreds of stories out there where people lose their entire life savings at the casino or a year’s salary. Robert Miller reported the story that stuck out the most on how an eighteen year old who had a large sum of money, eighty thousand dollars to be exact, from his parents’ death took it to the casino. After going to the casino his first time because he had extra money, he ended up losing a thousand or two. His mindset turned into how many peoples do and he thought that the next time he goes “he has to win because he lost last time” or “he has to win back what he lost”.
