Personal Narrative: West African Music

My music is my world. I circle my life around music that energizes and uplifts. My favorite genres are series of traditional and nontraditional African and Caribbean music. I am also fond of Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, Gospel, Country and Jazz music. I am the apart of the first generation Liberians in my family to be born in the states, I have a personal connection to West African music. It would be nearly undutiful if I do not keep up with the culture that shaped me into the woman I am today. West African music is lively and uplifting. As an evolution of Afro-beats- songs with African origins with upbeat rhythms and tempos come to rise it has gained attention from worldwide artists like Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus. Many of these upbeat fun sounds speak of God and how hard work pays off while some like many modern music has shifted to oversexualized content. African music keeps my life active- not only is it a good workout when dancing to it, but it replaces the need for caffeine in the morning-my music energizes my spirit. …show more content…

I amm able to recollect the classics and the most recent songs so well that Jamaicans are often surprised when they find out I am not in fact of Caribbean decent. Reggae music can be mellow, and speaks of enjoying life and now modern reggae, called dancehall are party songs that influences sex, fun and being your best self. North America and Europe artists have also adopted Caribbean influences in the past recent years. Finally, the work of African and Caribbean artists are being appreciated on a much greater scale. Another form of Caribbean music I have surrounded my life with is Soca. Soca stems from the island of Trinidad many other areas in the Caribbean It uses live music with fast tempos that influences listeners to shake from side to side and jump up and down. Soca music is also energizing, it is a perfect genre to listen to when working on
